When President Trump spoke at the 37th Annual National Peace Officers’ memorial service in May 15, 2018, he gestured to a special family in the audience to join him up on stage—they were the family of Miosotis Familia, who had been shot and killed in the line of duty.

Hearts all over the internet were touched as President Trump acknowledged her family and said: “Thank you so much, Can you come up here? Come up here, please? Come on, I’d like to have this family New York Police Department, close to my heart.”

After shaking hands with the deceased officer’s three children—Genesis Villella, Peter Vega, and sister Deliah—Trump greeted Familia’s 90-year-old mom, Adrianna Valoy, with a hug and kiss, and tried to lighten her heart with compliments.

As he led her to the podium, she clasped his arm. Trump then said: “So I promised that I wouldn’t tell you that she’s 90 years old, but you know what, she is really something right?”

“You look like 55, maybe, 55?” he said affectionately to her. “Boy I tell you what, you got up those stairs better than I did. Thank you sweetheart.”

At the conclusion of the memorial service, Trump said: “Thanks again to all of our wonderful police, our sheriffs and all of law enforcement and law enforcement officers. You’re incredible people,” he said. “You are the finest. You are the greatest. You are our heroes. God bless you. God bless our fallen heroes. God bless their families, and God bless America.”

Police officer Miosotis Familia was renowned for her strength, “She was a warrior, tell you the truth,” her nephew John Cuello told the New York Times. “She was a fighter, she was tough—and that was the job for her.”

The 48-year-old mother of three was shot in the head as she sat in her patrol car on July 5, 2017, in a Bronx precinct, making her the first female officer to be killed in the line of duty since 9/11.

“Shots fired! 10-85!” her partner, Officer Vincent Maher, yelled as he radioed for help. “My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! Hurry up central!”

The suspect, 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, was tracked down and killed by police fire as he opened fire. Bonds had sought psychiatric care just days earlier.

At the memorial service, Trump asked Officer Vincent Maher to share a few words about Familia.

“This is a woman who got injured a while ago and volunteered to come back to patrol to one of the roughest places in New York City,” Maher said. “She volunteered to leave a cushy job to come back to patrol.”

Familia, 48, was a 12-year NYPD veteran. Before that, she was a nurse and a Red Cross worker, The Daily News reported.

At her funeral, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Familia died “solely because she wore a uniform.”

“We’ve watched with horror these attacks on our police here in New York City and all around our country. It sickens us, and we know they cannot be tolerated, and we know they must end,” de Blasio said.

“She loved this city and she loved this country because she understood its magic. She saw what was possible, what it meant for herself, for her children. She lived for them, but she died for all of us,” he added.
