Despite heavy criticism from the usual crowd of robotic Trump haters, the President carried out a powerful display of American patriotism on this independence day.
“Today, we come together as one nation with this very special Salute to America,” a smiling Trump said. “We celebrate our history, our people, and the heroes who proudly defend our flag — the brave men and women of the United States military.”
Trump handled himself very well, all the while boasting about the historic accomplishments of the United States.
“Americans love our freedom and no one will ever take it away from us,” Trump said to chants of “U-S-A.” “Our nation is stronger today than it ever was before, it is stronger now stronger than ever.”
Trump’s speech was accented by the military might of the U.S., with flyovers from a variety of aircrafts ranging from the Air Forces F-22 Raptors and B-2 Stealth Bomber to the Navy’s F-18 Super Hornets and Army Apache helicopters.
“Today, just as it did 243 years ago, the future of American Freedom rests on the shoulders of men and women willing to defend it. As long as we stay true to our cause — as long as we remember our great history — and as long as we never stop fighting for a better future—then there will be nothing that America cannot do,” Trump said.
“We will never forget that we are Americans, and the future belongs to us,” he said. “We share one home, one heart and we are all made by one almighty God.”
Prior to the event, Trump sent out two tweets describing the celebration to come. “People are coming from far and wide to join us today and tonight for what is turning out to be one of the biggest celebrations in the history of our Country, SALUTE TO AMERICA, an all day event at the Lincoln Memorial, culminating with large scale flyovers of the most modern and advanced aircraft anywhere in the World. Perhaps even Air Force One will do a low & loud sprint over the crowd.”
Trump opponents criticized the cost of the event, never mind the fact that fireworks were donated to the tune of $750,000. Trump was quick to defend the cost of the event on Wednesday, tweeting that cost “will be very little compared to what it is worth.”
“We own the planes, we have the pilots, the airport is right next door (Andrews), all we need is the fuel,” he said, referring to Maryland’s Joint Base Andrews. “We own the tanks and all. Fireworks are donated by two of the greats.”
They also suggested that Trump was doing this as a “campaign stunt” and that Trump could be on the hook to reimburse the government if this was the truth.
Boy, did he prove them wrong.
Trump used the holiday instead to unite Americans. Issuing praise to the spirit that “runs through the veins of every American patriot.” He saw this as an opportunity to put a pause on the divisive politics that Americans face every day, and instead take us back to our roots, reminding us that at the end of the day we’re all on the same side.
