The coronavirus outbreak has hit the East and West Coast the hardest. New York City is on virtual lockdown as numerous citizens have tested positive for the disease. But only recently did their liberal mayor bother to take strong action. Instead, he opted to blame the federal government and make excuses. He was forced to do the right thing, after his staff did this.
Mayor Bill de Blasio considers himself a far-left Democrat. He has even been on the record for his support of socialist Bernie Sanders. But unlike other Democrats (and Republicans and everyone else), he seemed relatively unconcerned with the growing COVID-19 problem in his city.
New York, as you can imagine, is pretty crowded. It has an estimated 8 million residents. That’s about twice the number of the second-largest city in the country (Los Angeles). If there is one single place in the country that needs to take the coronavirus seriously, it’s there.
We know the virus spreads easily. Close proximity to an infected person can get someone sick. Worse than that is someone might have the virus days before experiencing symptoms. Such a situation moved New York-based businesses weeks ago to encourage employees to work from home. Many private businesses were taking action to reduce the risk of spread among residents. People were taking this seriously and planning accordingly.
But not the mayor! It seems de Blasio was reluctant to issue any orders that would contain the spread of COVID-19. He was unwilling to close the schools (a no-brainer move to protect families). And he refused to direct businesses like bars and restaurants to close their doors. Over the last weekend, when concern reached a fevered pitch, the city’s bars and eating establishments were open, many packed.
Now, the mayor has finally seen the light and is taking steps to prevent spread. But only after some of his staff threatened drastic measures.
New York City Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio reportedly refused to take strict measures to combat the coronavirus until aides threatened to quit which came after he attacked President Donald Trump over the issue.
“There had been arguments and shouting matches between the mayor and some of his advisers; some top health officials had even threatened to resign if he refused to accept the need to close schools and businesses, according to several people familiar with the internal discussions”…
De Blasio, a far-left Democrat who supports socialist Bernie Sanders, has responded to the crisis by repeatedly stating that the federal government needs to take over the supply chain and that entire industries needs to be nationalized…
De Blasio was then widely criticized for going and working out at the gym, something that people said showed that he was not taking the outbreak seriously. [Source: Daily Wire]
Wow, what an idiot. As a native-born New Yorker (who now lives far, far away), I can say without exception that Bill de Blasio is the worst mayor the city has ever seen.
Say what you will about flip-flopper Mike Bloomberg, but if he was still running the show, the city would be much safer right now. He would have closed schools a week ago (or earlier). He would have directed businesses to take serious steps to reduce the spread of the disease. And he would have been supportive of the federal government, not a whiny baby pointing fingers.
But this is the kind of leadership you get when you prioritize identity politics and virtue signaling over ability. Isn’t it funny that the places with the worst outbreaks are run by Democrats? That’s not just because they are large cities. It’s because they were slow to act and quick to criticize the president.
Only after they saw the damage being done did they get their act together. But how many Americans will suffer, because liberals like de Blasio were too stupid to act fast?
