In the early days of the COVID panic, New York was facing a death spiral. The mayor was useless and Gov. Cuomo could do little to help. It was only the monumental aid provided by the president that saved NYC from disaster. But today, the governor can only slam the White House and criticize their COVID response. Vice President Pence called out Cuomo’s doubletalk, exposing what the governor did to make things worse.
When it became clear that COVID was a serious threat, many Democrat leaders turned to Donald Trump. Liberal leaders at the state and local level were completely incapable of handling this new problem. They relied on the federal government to help them—and they were quick to thank. Both Gov. Newsom of California and Gov. Cuomo of New York praised Trump for his quick response and ample aid to their states.
But, times change, and as the left realized they could exploit the ongoing panic for politics, so did their tunes. The media dragged out their coverage of the disease to continue to stoke panic and fear. Democrats at the state and federal level spread misinformation and doom-and-gloom, hoping it would impact November.
And now, Gov. Cuomo is back to attacking the Trump administration for its “poor” response. Well, Mike Pence wasn’t having any of it. And he struck back hard.
Pence said, “Well, our hearts grieve for the fact that one in five of all the American lives that have been lost in the coronavirus pandemic were lost in the state of New York and some of that was because of poor decisions by the state and by Gov. Cuomo. But look, I liked it better when he said that President Trump’s leadership in the pandemic was, in his words, phenomenal. He said that repeatedly as we surged testing, as we surged PPE, as we sailed in a hospital ship, as we built hospitals in New York. I couldn’t be more proud of the support that we rendered to the people of New York. … Gov. Cuomo has been on again off again. He’s complimented the administration’s response and then he pivots to criticism, I think people see through that. It’s just politics.” [Source: Breitbart]
The vice president pointed out a very inconvenient fact to Cuomo, that the vast majority of Americans who died of COVID were New Yorkers. Some of that was out of Cuomo’s hands, but not the ones who got sick thanks to his own policy decisions. Cuomo signed an order that forced nursing homes to take in patients that were positive for COVID. That’s like throwing a live grenade into a crowded fox hole. The virus spread rapidly through the most-vulnerable demographic.
That is why New York’s death rate was so high.
Pence also pointed out how Cuomo’s attitude toward President Trump changed so radically since March and April. When New York was struggling to combat COVID, it was the Trump administration that “surged” aid to the state.
The president did not hesitate to send testing, personal protection equipment, a hospital ship, and various emergency field hospitals. Hell, they even converted the massive Jacob Javits Center into a hospital. There was nothing Trump did not spare to ensure New Yorkers had all the help they needed (and let’s not forget much of the need was because the state refused to stockpile supplies—and got rid of the supplies they had).
Yet now, Cuomo has the gall to say Trump’s COVID response was poor? What would New York had done, if Trump hadn’t move heaven and earth to save them? Would a million people have died in the city? Would all the hospitals have been overrun? Perhaps the entire state would be a smoking ruin right now, if Trump didn’t surge the support he did.
But that’s gratitude for you, at least from Democrats. You can give them the shirt off your back, but when politics are involved, they’ll stab you in the back.
