Joe Biden claimed that his administration marked a new age of “unity” for the country. In fact, soon after her entered office, the media and entertainment industries were super excited to “unite” the country–after dividing it for years over politics.
But quickly that claim of unity dissolved, as Democrats made it clear they did not care too much what conservatives wanted or thought. They forced through a second impeachment of Trump, despite a lack of support by Americans.
They forced through much of their radical agenda through reconciliation, a plan that does not require support from Republicans. It seems Democrats in Congress consider “unity” to mean: do what we say or we’ll run you over.
Now, Bernie Sanders is expressing his own definition of unity: agree to my radical plans for the country or we’ll do it without you.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) stated that there will be legislation on “the need to transform our energy system, create millions of good-paying jobs, combating climate change, and rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure.” And that the message to Republicans on infrastructure and health care is that “if you are not prepared to come on board, we’re going to go forward and we’re going to do it alone.”
“We’ve got 50 votes, plus the vice president. We can do it in the Senate. We’ve got the votes in the House. That’s what we intend to do.” [Source: Breitbart]
Sanders said his party is ready to force through a plan that would end our energy independence, glorify environmentalism, and reshape our country. But instead of opening up the agenda to input and guidance from both parties, he is offering an ultimatum to Republicans: get in line or we’ll just do it without you.
Hardly the kind of “unity” Americans were expecting. It’s the kind of comments you’d expect to hear from dictators and power-hungry tyrants. Sanders is supposed to be a progressive, open-minded liberal? He sounds more like Stalin, slamming his fists against the lectern.
The whole point of our government is to allow all viewpoints contribute to the success of our country. But Bernie is clearly stating that Republicans just need to get out of the way so the left can run the country any way they like.
Sanders is bragging that they have enough votes in the Senate to ram through their agenda. But he is forgetting that on many issues, they need more than 51 votes. And thanks to the preservation of the filibuster, Democrats won’t have as easy of a time getting their insane plans done.
That’s really why Sanders is boasting right now. He knows Republicans have the power to suspend their agenda any time they want. And he fears moderates like Manchin and Sinema, who can vote down the party’s most extreme plans.
So, Sanders is trying to intimidate Republicans into obeying, hoping they won’t try to fight back. Again, not the kind of thing a senator should be saying. But if Democrats have shown us anything, these days, it’s that they’re no longer pretending to uphold democracy. It’s their way or the highway.
But I have a feeling Bernie and the rest of them are in for a rude awakening.
