The COVID pandemic saw many U.S. governors acting like total dictators. Claiming it was for our “safety,” they locked us in our homes, closed our schools and businesses, and even shuttered our churches (violating the 1st Amendment). These leaders, drunk with power, even refused to relinquish their emergency powers when the coast was clear.
But worse than Gavin Newsom and Andrew Cuomo was, perhaps, the Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer. This entitled, spoiled Democrat seemed to enjoy hurting her own residents. Way back in May of 2020, when Michigan residents protested for the state to reopen, the governor extended her lockdown orders, simply out of spite.
Several times the state legislature voted to end her emergency powers, but she simply vetoed them. Vetoing lawmakers to give yourself more power? Is there anything more tyrannical than that?
Finally, the state has taken drastic steps to ensure this harpy of a woman can no longer ruin their lives.
The Michigan legislature completed repealing an emergency powers law Wednesday that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) exploited to maintain a perpetual lockdown for months.
A citizens initiative triggered a legislative vote to repeal the 1945 law that was immune to a Whitmer veto. Last week, the Senate voted to repeal the law. On Wednesday, it was the House’s turn…
“Today’s vote is a resounding victory for the people of Michigan, who over the past year, suffered needlessly under Governor Whitmer’s abuse of the 1945 Emergency Powers which she used to impose some of the most restrictive COVID rules in the nation,” Eric Ventimiglia, the group’s executive director, said in a statement. There was little reason why Whitmer, and Whitmer alone, needed to wield this much power. She wanted to make all the decisions concerning Michigan’s COVID policy. She refused to go through the democratic channels, relying on the legislature to pass bills for her to sign. Instead, she clawed at as much power as she could.
Did this have anything to do with keeping Michigan “safe” from COVID? Of course not. The CDC was issuing guidance for the entire country. Most individuals and businesses were taking necessary measures to stay safe. And, eventually, the vaccines greatly reduced the risk of catching the virus. So, why was Whitmer so determined to hold onto this power?
Let’s be honest, she would have never given it up on her own. Even after the pandemic becomes a distant memory, a crooked politician like her would have made some excuse to keep this power. Hell, she might have tried to use it stay in office forever, elections and term limits be damned!
This is exactly why we have a Constitution and separation of powers. So that one person doesn’t get into their head that they should be governor forever. So that the people have the means to limit or remove someone who is clearly abusing their office.
For Whitmer not to realize that is very telling.
