A large group, who had gathered in the park to play in the snow, assaulted the officers with snowballs when the cops arrived on the scene.

This wasn’t just some harmless prank either, New Yorkers relentlessly pelted police officers with hardened masses of snow, injuring some and sending them to the hospital.

This chaotic scene, which unfolded on a Monday afternoon, is not just about snowballs. It is about respect—or rather, the lack of it—New Yorkers seem to have developed for law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day to keep residents safe.

Yet, here we are, dealing with a situation where their safety was compromised by a mob who decided that pelting them with snow was acceptable behavior. Governor Kathy Hochul took to social media to express her disapproval, calling the incident unacceptable.

Law enforcement leaders, including Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, condemned the attack, labeling it as criminal.

The NYPD is aware of certain videos taken earlier today in Washington Square Park showing individuals attacking cops.

The Police Benevolent Association has gone further, demanding that those responsible be arrested.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose campaign messaging included suggesting cops were racist and that he planned to defund large swaths of the NYPD, issued a limp-wrist response to the video. No condemnation, no standing up for the officers injured during the attack, nothing.

I’ve seen the videos of kids throwing snowballs at NYPD officers in Washington Square Park.

Officers, like all city workers, have been out in a historic blizzard, keeping New Yorkers safe and cars moving.
