Is Chuck Todd the worst? Because I’m pretty sure Chuck Todd is the worst.

The venerable “journalist” took to the airwaves this morning to lob Joe Biden softball questions on his Sunday morning show. One of the questions turned out to be so vile and disgusting that not even the former Vice President was willing to play along with it.

Here’s the video.

There’s so much wrong with that question that it blows the mind that Todd could even present it with a straight face.

One, the response was not “slow” by almost any objective measure. The CDC was mobilized within days of the first reported case out of China. President Trump then banned travel from China the moment the outbreak started to spread outside of Wuhan in late January. By February, when most media outlets (including Todd’s own NBC News) were still downplaying the risks, the federal government was already moving rapidly to prepare.

To the extent that the response was delayed, it’s largely because the Chinese and the World Health Organization were actively lying to the world about the transmissible nature of the disease and how far-reaching it had become. There’s also the reality that the federal government is not magic. No amount of action could have stopped this from becoming a big issue in the United States. Our geography and populations are just too expansive and diverse. We couldn’t just lock down 90% of our population in one order like South Korea did with Seoul.

But aside from those facts, Todd choosing to try to frame Trump as a murderer with “blood on his hands” because of possible federal shortcomings is absolutely gross. Did Todd ever ask such a question about the delayed H1N1 response? Of course he didn’t, because it would have been ridiculous.

This guy has taken a once-great show and run it directly into the ground. It’s amazing to me that so many media outlets are willing to set their legacy brands on fire by letting people like Todd pose as anything other than the biased political actors they are.

I’ll also note that Todd’s question ignores the fact he’s asking it to a guy who stumped against early action, calling it “hysterical xenophobia” to shut down travel as the virus began to spread. Oddly enough, Biden wasn’t asked about that. Instead, Todd just kept to his Democrat talking points.

With that said, I’ll end by giving Biden some credit for not being willing to swing at the garbage pitch Todd threw him here.

The media aren’t liking Trump’s pressers and it may not be for the reason most think. They have become a staple of the Wuhan virus epidemic, with the administration giving crucial airtime to experts like Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx.

Now, an NPR affiliate in Seattle is refusing to show the President’s daily question and answer sessions.

This is just nonsense. While there is always the risk of things being misstated or not fully conveyed, no one speaking at these pressers has been giving false information. KUOW provides no citation to exactly what they are talking about, because of course they don’t.

CNN and NBC (one of the worst offenders of garbage reporting throughout this ordeal) followed the same path today.

But let’s be honest. There’s a reason why they are suddenly wanting to do this and it’s not because the media got religion about Trump’s supposed “false information.”

No, it’s because his approval ratings are rising.

As streiff reported yesterday, Gallup also has the President receiving his highest marks of his presidency.

Forty-nine percent of U.S. adults, up from 44% earlier this month, approve of the job Trump is doing as president. Trump also had 49% job approval ratings — the best of his presidency — in late January and early February around the time of the Senate impeachment trial that resulted in his acquittal…

…Trump’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic may be behind his higher overall approval rating. Americans give the president generally positive reviews for his handling of the situation, with 60% approving and 38% disapproving. Ninety-four percent of Republicans, 60% of independents and 27% of Democrats approve of his response.

The media are incensed by this. They can’t figure out why their propaganda campaigns aren’t working. In their bubble, Trump should be cratering right now and every bad outcome should be credited to his supposed lack of leadership. But the American people, at least a majority of them, aren’t seeing it that way.

So what does the media do? Simply start censoring the information they send out in order to try to tamp down those rising ratings.

It’s so transparent. It’s also fun to watch these news outlets squirm a bit.

If you had the Governor of California shunning the current hysteria being played up in the media over the Wuhan Flu, collect your winnings at the window.

When asked yesterday about how the response is going and how the federal government has helped, Gov. Gavin Newsom, one of the most liberal Democrats in the country, said that he’s gotten everything he’s asked for. This seemed to be a shock to the journalists reporting on it.

This should be obvious to anyone paying attention. It’s fairly easy to ascertain that the Trump administration gains absolutely nothing from not doing everything they can to contain this strain of coronavirus. A president is never going to throw on a lab coat and actually go work at the CDC. He or she is also not going to manage quarantines. The truth is, whether some want to hear it or not, a president has very little control here except in his ability to rubber stamp protocols already in place.

But the desire to turn this into “Trump’s Katrina” is so pervasive that the media will literally say anything they feel frames things negatively for the administration. Good for Gavin Newsom for not playing along. At some point, facts have to matter. Reality rarely fits into our partisan bubbles, and though it’s usually just politics to try to force it to do so, we are dealing with a pandemic here. Some things should be above politicizing.

In the world of politics, this was probably the most predictable thing possible.

Mitt Romney is doing Mitt Romney things again by signaling that he may oppose subpoenas that could widen the investigation into Burisma. The first move by Sen. Johnson was set to be the calling of a consultant of the company in for questioning. This could obviously lead to Hunter Biden and those around him being in the crosshairs as well.

But Romney doesn’t seem keen on investigations all the sudden. His reason? He thinks it looks too political.

Sometimes I think Romney is just a parody of everything conservatives can’t stand about some Republicans. This is the same guy who egged on a five month impeachment investigation that was clearly rooted in politics. This is also the same guy who supported a three year investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign, which again was highly politicized. Yet, he wants to draw the line at looking into Hunter Biden, a guy who was making $80,000 a month working for a corrupt oil company while his father ran the foreign policy in the same country.

How very, very convenient. The Hunter Biden issue is also something Romney would never try to hand wave away if we were dealing with one of Trump’s children.

But this is who Mitt Romney is. As I said in one of my previous pieces on him, he’s much more concerned about being the foil to his own party, lapping up the plaudits in the process, than actually abiding by any real principles. That’s why he’s been so highly malleable throughout his political career.

But this is the guy we are supposed to go to bat for? Nonsense. Such actions have never been reciprocated by Romney, even when he ran for President. There’s a reason so many Republicans said “forget it, you get Trump now.” It’s not because they are rubes or hate decorum. It’s because they got sick and tired of politicians in the GOP demanding that voters have their back while they could never be bothered to return the favor.

Mollie Hemingway threw a bit of criticism his way after this report broke.

She’s right. This may be the most Mitt Romney thing Mitt Romney has ever done. If he does indeed scuttle the subpoenas (and effectively, the investigation), there’s simply no logical explanation except that he’s doing it out of pure spite. The Burisma issue is tied to the use of government funds by major political figures (yes, including Joe Biden) and it deserves scrutiny. It’s not simply “political,” it’s a real scandal.

It should also be noted that Romney might have a bit of a conflict of interest here.

While I’m not ready to go down that road without further evidence, it is awful weird that Romney, who loves investigations into Trump, suddenly doesn’t want anyone sniffing around Burisma and Biden. We can only hope that Sen. Johnson is able to talk some sense into him.

But in the end, this is why most Republicans can’t stand Mitt Romney. Love him or hate him, this is why.
