Nike reportedly cancelled a patriotic shoe design for Independence Day with a Betsy Ross flag because Colin Kaepernick objected to the symbol, according to the Washington Post.

The Air Max 1 USA shoe was scheduled to sell ahead of the Fourth of July celebration on Wednesday.

Kaepernick, who is known for originating the kneeling protest against the national anthem during NFL games, reportedly told the company that the flag, with thirteen stars, was a symbol for slavery that offended many.

“Nike has chosen not to release the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July as it featured the old version of the American flag,” a spokeswoman for the company said.

Images of the shoe can still be found on social media:

The company asked retailers to return the shoes without telling them why.

The retail price for the shoe was $140, before it was pulled from shelves.

Nike was criticized heavily on social media for signing the controversial former NFL quarterback for a multi-million dollar marketing campaign. Despite calls for a boycott of the athletic shoe company, Nike sales grew immediately after the campaign advertisement aired, according to some industry metrics.

“There was speculation that the Nike/Kaepernick campaign would lead to a drop in sales,” said Hetal Pandya of Edison Trends in September 2018, “but our data over the last week does not support that theory.”

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday pardoned several felons, two of whom are set to be deported, in what many saw as a rebuke to President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Newsom took office in January and has used the gubernatorial office to criticize and oppose the president on a myriad of policies, but especially illegal immigration.

Two felons were pardoned for crimes that made them eligible for deportation, from solicitation of murder to grand theft. All of those granted clemency had already served their prison terms for their crimes.

“By granting these pardons to people who are transforming their lives,” read a statement from the governor’s office, “the Governor is seeking to remove barriers to employment and public service, restore civic rights and responsibilities and prevent unjust collateral consequences of conviction.”

Both of the felons who were set for deportation were Cambodian refugees who were brought into the country legally, but committed gang-related crimes later.

The pardons do not protect them from deportation proceedings, but the actions by Newsom will help their arguments in court to fight deportation back to Cambodia.

The governor compared the president to anti-immigrant “demagogues” who passed the federal Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, a law that targeted a community for exclusion from immigration. He made the comments while speaking to the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association ahead of the pardons.

The Asian Law Caucus celebrated the announcement from Newsom.

“We are deeply grateful to Governor Newsom for recognizing the plight of refugees who are being targeted by the Trump administration and for acting with compassion and leadership to stop their deportations,” said a statement from Executive Director Aarti Kohli.

Newsom was criticized in March when he overrode state law and used his executive power, some say improperly, to halt capital punishment in California.

They’re afraid that Trump will control the news reporting too well

The chairs of five House committees, all Democrats, are demanding that U.S. Attorney General William Barr cancel his press conference scheduled for Thursday on the Mueller report.

The Democrats released a letter with a joint statement stating the reasons for their demand.

“He should let the full report speak for itself,” the statement read.

“The Attorney General should cancel the press conference and provide the full report to Congress, as we have requested,” they continued. “With the Special Counsel’s fact-gathering work concluded, it is now Congress’ responsibility to assess the findings and evidence and proceed accordingly.”

Democratic pundits have been angrily denouncing the plan from Barr to give a media briefing about a document that has not been released yet.

Here are the five Democrats that signed the letter:

  • Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee
  • Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee
  • Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), the chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee
  • Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee
  • Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee

Barr has been criticizing since releasing a summary of the Mueller report that said it did not exonerate the president but could not find sufficient evidence to support claims of collusion with the Russian government in the 2016 election.

Nadler had tweeted his misgivings about Barr’s plans earlier on Wednesday.

“I’m deeply troubled by reports that the WH is being briefed on the Mueller report AHEAD of its release,” he tweeted.

“Now, DOJ is informing us we will not receive the report until around 11/12 tomorrow afternoon — AFTER Barr’s press conference,” he added. “This is wrong.”

Even those on the left are shocked by the obvious corruption

Two law enforcement officials confirmed to ABC-7 in Chicago that the FBI is looking into the circumstances surrounding the bizarre dismissal of felony charges against “Empire” star Jussie Smollett.

Chicago police seized the headlines when they charged the star with filing false police reports over an attack he allegedly suffered at the hands of supporters of President Donald Trump.

Then the public was stunned by the news that all charges were dropped in exchange for forfeiture of a $10,000 bond payment and community service.

Smollett maintained his claims of innocence after he was released by the police.

Reporter Rob Elgas of ABC-7 emphasized that the FBI was not officially investigating the matter, but was conducting a “review” or “inquiry.”

Other suspicions were raised when it was discovered that a former Obama aide had contacted State Attorney Kim Foxx on behalf of the Smollett family over their concerns about how the Chicago police were conducting their investigation.

Foxx later recused herself from the case, and the president of a Chicago Police union called for an investigation into whether she interfered inappropriately with the case.

Democrats do not want Trump to win on the border wall

Democrats have taken the first steps in challenging the declaration of national emergency by President Donald Trump made Friday in order to circumvent Congress on the construction of the border wall.

The Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee released a letter sent to the White House indicating that they have begun an investigation into the constitutionality of the declaration.

“We believe your declaration of an emergency shows a reckless disregard for the separation of powers and your own responsibilities under our constitutional system,” said the letter signed by committee Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) and other members.

“By fabricating an emergency in order to bypass the political process for allocating a budget, you appear to be abusing both this trust and your own oath of office,” the letter continued.

The committee is demanding communications that were made between the White House and the Department of Justice in relation to the declaration of national emergency.

Trump has admitted that the declaration of a national emergency was made because Democrats were unwilling to approve of the border wall.

There have been 58 declarations of national emergency in U.S. history, with 31 still in effect.

Nadler made his own person opposition to the declaration known through his social media account.

“The President’s decision to declare a national emergency is a gross abuse of power that cannot be tolerated,” he tweeted. “Congress will hold the Administration accountable for this reckless disregard of the rule of law.”

Other organizations have said that they will use the legal system to challenge the authority and constitutionality of the national emergency.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) denounced the action by the president in a statement released on Friday.

“This is plainly a power grab by a disappointed President, who has gone outside the bounds of the law to try to get what he failed to achieve in the constitutional legislative process,” read a joint statement from Schumer and Pelosi.
