On Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi offered an apparent warning to politicians in the United States who “attack and slander China” over COVID-19, and are “costing … lives,” and “pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War.”

“It’s most regrettable that while the coronavirus is still out there, a political virus is also spreading in the U.S., and jumping at any opportunity to attack and slander China,” Wang said. “Some politicians ignore the basic facts and make up countless lies and conspiracy theories concerning China.”

Wang then claimed that a “list of these lies has been compiled and debunked online,” and that the list will continue to grow.

“I call on the U.S. side to stop wasting precious time and stop costing people’s lives,” Wang said before claiming that the United States and China must cooperate and “share our experience.”

“Both China and the U.S. stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. This best captures what we have learned – positive and otherwise – from the past decades,” Wang stated. “Both sides should take this lesson to heart. China and the U.S. have different social systems, but this is a result of the different choices made by people, which we must respect.”

After noting that China and the United States have “many disagreements,” Wang said that our two countries must cooperate and that “China remains prepared to work with the U.S. in the spirit of no conflict or confrontation, mutual respect, and win-win cooperation, and build a relationship based on coordination, cooperation, and stability.”

Want then stated that “China will defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” and that the United States must “give up its wishful thinking of changing China or stopping 1.4 billion people’s historic march toward modernization.”

The diplomat then issued a troubling warning shot:

It has come to our attention that some political forces in the U.S. are taking China-U.S. relations hostage and pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War. This dangerous attempt to turn back the will of history will undo the fruits of decades-long China-U.S. cooperation, dampen Americans own development prospects, and put world stability and prosperity in jeopardy.

This isn’t the first time a Chinese official has attempted to place blame on the United States for coronavirus-related “lies.”

In mid-March, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian claimed on Twitter that the United States Army might have brought the virus to China.

“When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected?” Zhao wrote. “What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!”

China also attempted to silence a doctor who spoke out about the virus early on.

On December 30, Dr. Li Wenliang sent a message to a small group of people about the coronavirus. According to a report in The Lancet, four days after sending the message, Li “was summoned to the Public Security Bureau in Wuhan and made to sign a statement in which he was accused of making false statements that disturbed the public order.”

Li later died from COVID-19.

In a February 7 piece in The New York Times, it was reported that China ignored offers from the CDC for “more than a month” to “send a team of experts” in to help with the coronavirus outbreak.

“Current and former public health officials and diplomats” reportedly told The New York Times that they believed “the reluctance [came] from China’s top leaders, who do not want the world to think they need outside help.”

In early-April, Bloomberg reported that according to three anonymous U.S. officials, “the U.S. intelligence community concluded in a classified report to the White House” that China had “intentionally” been undercounting their COVID-19 case totals and deaths.

The above are just several examples from a larger pattern of misdirection and obfuscation from China regarding COVID-19. These latest remarks from Wang appear to be just one more attempt to spin the ball and intimidate the United States.

During Sunday evening’s Democratic debate in Washington, D.C., between former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the coronavirus was a hot topic.

Near the beginning of the debate, moderator Jake Tapper of CNN asked Sanders about how the United States might avoid ending up in the same situation as Italy, where stories have emerged of a massively overburdened health care system.

“If you were president, right now, what would you do to make sure every sick American is able to get treatment so the U.S. does not suffer the same fate as Italy, where doctors have to decide right now who gets life-saving treatment and who does not?” asked Tapper.

Sanders replied, but steered clear of the portion of Tapper’s question pertaining the Italian health care system:

Jake, lets be honest, and understand that this coronavirus pandemic exposes the incredible weakness and disfunctionality of our current health care system. Now, we are spending twice as much per person on health care as the people of any other country. How in god’s name does it happen that we end up with 87 million people who are uninsured or underinsured – and there are people who are watching this program tonight who’re saying, “I’m not feeling well. Should I go to the doctor? But I can’t afford to go to the doctor! What happens if I am sick? It’s going to cost thousands of dollars for treatment! Who’s going to feed my kids?”

We are the only major country on earth not to guarantee health care to all people. We’re spending so much money, and yet we are not even prepared for this pandemic. How come we don’t have enough doctors? How come hospitals in rural areas are shutting down? How come people can’t afford to get the prescription drugs they need? Because we have a bunch of crooks who are running the pharmaceutical industry ripping us off every single day. And I’ll tell you something right now. In the midst of this epidemic, you’ve got people in the pharmaceutical industry who are saying, “Oh wow, what an opportunity to make a fortune.”

So the word has got to go out – I certainly would do this as President – you don’t worry, people of America, do not worry about the cost of prescription drugs, do not worry about the cost of the health care that you’re going to get because we are a nation, a civilized democratic society, everybody, rich and poor, middle class, will get the care they need. The drug companies will not rip us off.

When former Vice President Biden took the next question, he used it as an opportunity to jab Sanders over his previous answer.

“With all due respect to Medicare for All, you have a single-payer system in Italy. It doesn’t work there,” Biden said. “It has nothing to do with Medicare for All. That would not solve the problem at all.”

The former vice president then laid out his plan for those who need testing and treatment for the coronavirus. “It is not working in Italy right now, and they have a single-payer system,” Biden reiterated.

Sanders rebutted, saying that with the United States’ health care spending per capita, the country should be prepared:

One might expect that we are preparing effectively for a pandemic, that we were ready with the ventilators, with the ICUs, with the test kits that we need…

In terms of Medicare for All, despite what the vice president is saying, what the experts tell us is that one of the reasons that we are unprepared, and have been unprepared, is we don’t have a system. We’ve got thousands of private insurance plans – that is not a system that is prepared to provide health care to all people.

Biden hit back, saying, “That has nothing to do when you’re in a national crisis. A national crisis says, we’re responding. It’s all free. You don’t have to pay for a thing. That has nothing to do with whether or not you have an insurance policy. This is a crisis.”

The coronavirus, which originated in China’s Hubei province, has infected more than 158,000 worldwide and left over 6,00o dead, according to NBC News, which cites its own reports, as well as “as well as the “World Health Organization, state government leaders, and health officials.”

There have been 3,510 confirmed cases in the United States, and 67 deaths.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) recently appeared on C-SPAN’s “After Words” program to promote his new book, “The Case Against Socialism.”

During the approximately 45 minute interview with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) acting as host, Paul spoke about the dangers of people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) promoting socialist ideology unchallenged.

When Gaetz asked Paul about the way in which certain politicians and media figures “champion Venezuela,” the senator replied:

Venezuela is just such a disaster. I mean, people literally eating their pets. We tell the story of a young lady who was a teenage girl, and she has a gang, but her gang is to defend the turf of trash. So, there’s certain garbage receptacles and she keeps people out of them because those are her garbage receptacles to look for food. How sad. People killing rats in the street to try to eat them, pigeons, and it just, it really is a sad thing.

Kind of going back to the world economy thing, we have to understand why the world economy got better, and we have to understand why Venezuela’s deteriorating into, you know, chaos – and that’s, I think, part of what the book is doing – it’s part of also the debate we should be having up here, and we don’t seem to have it in Congress, is that we don’t develop, we aren’t really talking about which economically system is better.

And nobody in the media seems to care that what AOC is supporting or what Bernie is supporting is Stalin and Mao and Pol Pot, and all these terrible ideas, and they get away with it because they aren’t challenged.

Later in the interview, Gaetz brings up Sanders’ remark from the 1980’s about breadlines.

“It’s funny, sometimes American journalists talk about how bad a country is, that people are lining up for food. That is a good thing!” Sanders stated. “In other countries people don’t line up for food. The rich get the food and the poor starve to death.”

To this, Paul replied: “Yeah, well, we suggest that he actually go down and see what the lines are like in Venezuela. I don’t think people are too excited about lines.”

On the subject of politicians and media personalities defending socialism, during his October 11 appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Paul received pushback from guest-host Ana Navarro, who suggested that Venezuela was not a representation of socialism.

NAVARRO: Let me ask you this because I live in Miami, there’s tens of thousands of Venezuelan exiles living there. You talk a lot about Venezuela in your new book. I get a lot of political ads from the Republican Party – Donald Trump has tweeted this, many have tweeted this – “If you vote for Democrats, they will turn the United States into Venezuela.” Do you think that’s a fair statement to make?

PAUL: Well, if you vote for a socialist, you might get socialism.

NAVARRO: Come on. Don’t do that. Maduro is not a socialist; he’s a corrupt, murderous thug who is starving his people.

PAUL: That’s not true.

NAVARRO: That’s not true? Maduro’s not a thug and a murderer who’s starving his people?

PAUL: Let’s have a conversation here. Chavez was a socialist, and socialism was the economic system Venezuela –

NAVARRO: And they stole. [It’s a] kleptocracy. It’s not socialism.

PAUL: But here’s the question … they voted for socialism.

Paul attempted to finish his thought, but Navarro cut him of, falsely implying that Paul wouldn’t condemn Maduro as a “murderous thug.”

The Daily Wire reached out to Venezuelan expat Daniel Di Martino for a response to Navarro’s claim that Maduro isn’t a socialist, and he stated:

Ana Navarro is wrong to say Maduro isn’t socialist. Nicolás Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, nationalized thousands of companies and greatly expanded welfare programs and government employment. It was as a result of these socialist policies that our economy was destroyed and that today 9 out of every 10 Venezuelans live in poverty and more than four million Venezuelans like myself have been forced to leave our homeland. Corrupt and evil people govern many countries around the world, but these countries don’t see the terrible humanitarian crises that socialist countries like Venezuela and Cuba experience.

“It is insulting that media personalities continue to try to defend the socialist system that has killed so many people throughout history just to protect the radical Democrats that promote those same policies in America,” Di Martino added.

On Saturday, President Trump sent out three tweets regarding abortion. In these tweets, he implored conservatives and Republicans to stay united rather than divided over the issue of exceptions for “rape [and] incest.”

As most people know, and for those who would like to know, I am strongly pro-life, with the three exceptions – rape, incest and protecting the life of the mother – the same position taken by Ronald Reagan. We have come very far in the last two years with 105 wonderful new Federal Judges (many more to come), two great new Supreme Court Justices, the Mexico City Policy, and a whole new and positive attitude about the right to life. The radical Left, with late-term abortion (and worse), is imploding on this issue. We must stick together and win for life in 2020. If we are foolish and do not stay UNITED as one, all of our hard fought gains for life can, and will, rapidly disappear!

As of publication, the president’s tweets have more than a quarter of a million “likes,” and have been retweeted nearly 36,000 times.

Shortly after the tweets went up, Live Action, an anti-abortion organization founded by Lila Rose, replied:

Hi, Mr. President, please see this powerful testimony from Jennifer Christie, who was raped on a business trip & then discovered she was pregnant. Rape or incest are horrible situations, and abusers need to be held fully to the law — but abortion is not the path to healing.

Live Action then posted two articles, one about women choosing to have their children following rape, and another about how abortion is never “medically necessary.”

Abra Singleton, the Southwest Regional Director for the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform (CBR), another anti-abortion organization, also replied to the president: “Either abortion ends the life of an innocent human, or it doesn’t. What you’re saying is that certain preborn humans are not worthy of life. Humans conceived in rape/incest are still humans.”

The argument being made by Singleton and Live Action is a straightforward one — a fetus has the same intrinsic value regardless of its origin.

If it’s morally unacceptable to abort a fetus conceived by choice or by accident, then the termination of a fetus conceived in rape or incest is equally objectionable as there is no difference among the four. The circumstances surrounding the conception may be different, but those circumstances do not impact the innate humanity of the fetus itself.

They argue that to claim the mantle of “pro-life” while believing in exceptions for rape and incest is intellectually inconsistent and dishonest.

Americans are as divided as they ever have been on the issue of abortion. 48% of Americans identify as “pro-life,” while 48% identify as “pro-choice,” according to a May 2018 Gallup survey.

In the same survey, 29% of respondents said that abortion should be “legal under any” circumstances, 18% said it should “illegal in all” circumstances, and 50% said it should be “legal only under certain” circumstances.

While there is an approximately equal number of individuals identifying as pro-life and pro-choice, the only trimester in which a majority (60%) of respondents said abortion should be legal is the first. Just 28% believe that it should be legal in the second trimester, and only 13% believe that it should be legal in the third trimester, according to Gallup.

[Full disclosure: CBR’s Abra Singleton is my sister.]
