In a moment reminiscent of her husband’s 2008 narcissistic claim that his clinching the nomination for the presidency was the moment when “the rise of the oceans began to slow and the planet began to heal,” former First Lady Michelle Obama, speaking at the Obama Foundation Summit at the Illinois Institute of Technology, posited that people all over the world feel that Barack Obama is their president.

Michelle Obama stated:

Barack’s presidential library could have been anywhere in the world because there are so many people who feel like he is their president all over the world. New York wanted it; Hawaii wants it; because it’s also an economic engine because it will be a visited presidential library. Because it’s going to be a live, It’s a first. So we had to think of where will we put this resource, because it will be a resource.

Perhaps Michelle Obama might want to check with the people of Poland. In 2009, Obama canceled an anti-ballistic missile system. In 2012, President Bronislaw Komorowski slammed Obama saying, “Our mistake was that by accepting the American offer of a shield we failed to take into account the political risk associated with a change of president. We paid a high political price. We do not want to make the same mistake again. We must have a missile system as an element of our defenses.” The Telegraph noted, “Mr. Obama’s decision to scrap George W Bush’s original missile shield dismayed the Polish government, especially as many Poles saw it as an attempt to appease Russia, Poland’s historical and Cold War foe.”

Or Michelle Obama could ask the people of Israel, who watched during the 2014 Gaza War against the terrorist group Hamas as Obama suspended a shipment of Hellfire missiles to Israel, endangering Israel, which was under siege from rocket attacks. Or the people of Israel could remember Barack Obama ignoring the numerous murderous terrorist attacks launched in Israel by Palestinian Arabs, saying as a presidential candidate in 2008:

This is the moment when we must defeat terror and dry up the well of extremism that supports it. This threat is real and we cannot shrink from our responsibility to combat it. If we could create NATO to face down the Soviet Union, we can join in a new and global partnership to dismantle the networks that have struck in Madrid and Amman; in London and Bali; in Washington and New York.” Obama didn’t mention Israel.

Or Michelle Obama could ask the people of Crimea, who watched as Russia’s Vladmir Putin launched an annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Obama’s White House weakly protested, calling it a “breach of international law.” As The Wall Street Journal mocked Obama in an op-ed, “That will have the Kremlin quaking.” The Journal added, “The only concrete U.S. action was to suspend participation in preparations for June’s G-8 summit in Sochi.” The Journal concluded, “The Ukrainians can’t be left alone to face Russia, and the Kremlin’s annexation of Crimea can’t be allowed to stand.”

Or Michelle Obama could ask the people of Syria, who watched after Syrian president Bashar al-Assad allegedly launched a Sarin nerve gas attack that “killed more than 1,000 people, hundreds of them children,” as The Guardian reported, and Obama, who had insisted that use of chemical weapons would be crossing a “red line,” announced the U.S. would not attack the Assad regime.

On Friday, President Trump, aware that those on the Left actually want the economy to plunge so his reelection chances would be damaged, took the bull by the horns in a direct message to the American people, tweeting:

Trump is acutely aware that the perception of how the economy is faring can affect consumers’ behavior; he told reporters on Tuesday, “I think the word ‘recession’ is a word that’s inappropriate because it’s just a word that certain people — I’m going to be kind — certain people, and the media, are trying to build up because they’d love to see a recession. We’re very far from a recession.”

Trump is not alone in surmising that Democrats and members of the Left want the economy to fail; earlier this week, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) told reporters:

Some of the Democrats are trying to say the world’s going to end tomorrow as far as the economy goes. But when I talk with business leaders — I talked with some this morning in Wapakoneta — and they’re like, “We’re turning down jobs because we’re swamped.” I don’t see what the Democrats are pushing right now. It’s kind of troubling to think some Democrats, it appears they’re almost wishing for a recession because they think it helps them politically instead of focusing on what’s best for our country. And obviously a recession is never good for our country … Like I said, most indicators right now are very positive and have been positive. I think confidence is still strong. I think confidence started to get strong about 4 a.m. on Nov. 9, 2016, when it was announced that President Trump was going to be our next president.

Last Sunday, Larry Kudlow, Director of the National Economic Council, asserted, “Consumers, first of all, they’re working. The employment numbers are terrific. Second of all, they are working at much higher wages. Third of all, they’re spending. And fourth of all, interestingly, they are saving, even while their spending … I think we’re in pretty good shape and I want to just say you know, we should not be afraid of optimism. I don’t know what it is, everybody wants to talk about pessimism, recession … There’s no recession on the horizon.”

As The Daily Mail noted, unemployment remains at a 50-year low.

Prior to Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell speaking at the Fed’s annual Jackson Hole symposium on Friday morning, Trump, who has been pushing for the Fed to cut interest rates — he said Tuesday, “I’d like to see a cut in the Fed rate because that should’ve happened a long time ago. I think they’re being very tardy in not doing in and not having done it sooner. They raised too quickly. And, you know, I’ve been quite vocal on that” — tweeted, “Now the Fed can show their stuff!”

The man who was the Obama administration’s chief of removing illegal immigrants said on Wednesday that it was his boss, President Barack Obama, who had the idea of putting illegal immigrant children in the “cages” that Democrats have used as a bludgeon against President Trump.

Thomas Homan, Obama’s executive associate director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement between May 2013 and January 2017, was responsible for “promoting public safety and national security by maintaining direct oversight of critical ICE programs and operations to identify, locate, arrest, detain and remove illegal aliens from the United States,” according to his LinkedIn profile. Since January 2017, he has served as Acting Director for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He stated on Wednesday, “I’ve been to that facility, where they talk about cages. That facility was built under President Obama under (Homeland Security) Secretary Jeh Johnson. I was there because I was there when it was built,” according to The Washington Examiner.

Homan, speaking at the conference hosted by the Center for Immigration Studies, noted a Democratic chairman who asked a Trump official, “You still keeping kids in cages?” He snapped, “I would answer the question, ‘The kids are being housed in the same facility built under the Obama administration.’ If you want to call them cages, call them cages. But if the left wants to call them cages and the Democrats want to call them cages then they have to accept the fact that they were built and funded in FY 2015.”

Homan said that the Border Patrol facilities where illegal immigrants are detained “were not built to take care of children,” adding, “It’s chain link dividers that keeps children separate from unrelated adults. It’s about protecting children.”

In June 2017, as The Washington Examiner pointed out, Homan told a House Appropriations subcommittee:

It isn’t the fault of law enforcement that people get separated. It’s the fault of the perpetrator. If someone enters this country illegally and knows he’s in the country illegally and is found to be in the country illegally and is ordered removed from the country and chooses to have a child in this country that’s a U.S. citizen by virtue of birth, he put himself in that position, so ICE is not separating that family.

Unlike other agencies, we do this despite a constant deluge of biased attacks against ICE personnel by those who disagree with the laws we enforce. While I recognize that people have the right to protest laws they don’t agree with I want to emphasize to the public and to the media and to this committee that ice officers don’t write the laws. They enforce the laws …

We are all blessed to live in the greatest country on earth and I can’t blame anybody who wants to live here… But we are also a country built on the foundation of the rule of law. Those who choose to enter this country illegally which is a crime, a federal crime, or to overstay their visa have knowingly chosen to break the law. Meanwhile, millions of people who have become permanent members of our society through our generous legal channels, they have shown their respect for the rule of law and for the American people.

On Tuesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her comparison of the situation at the southern border of the United States to the concentration camps of the Holocaust. She was promptly reprimanded by Rep. Dan Crenshaw, who gave her a lesson in reality as well as firing a challenge directly at her. Fellow Texan Steven Crowder also slammed Ocasio-Cortez with a lacerating tweet.

As The Daily Wire reported, on Monday night Ocasio-Cortez said during a live Instagram video, “The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border and that is exactly what they are. They are concentration camps. And, um, if that doesn’t bother you, I don’t, I don’t know, I like, we can have, okay whatever.” She also alluded to the Holocaust by adding the words “Never Again,” blathering, “I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that we should not that ‘Never Again’ means something and that the fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the home of the free is extraordinarily disturbing and we need to do something about it.”

On Tuesday morning Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “This administration has established concentration camps on the southern border of the United States for immigrants, where they are being brutalized with dehumanizing conditions and dying. This is not hyperbole. It is the conclusion of expert analysis. And for the shrieking Republicans who don’t know the difference: concentration camps are not the same as death camps. Concentration camps are considered by experts as ‘the mass detention of civilians without trial.’ And that’s exactly what this administration is doing.”

Crenshaw fired back, “Clearly I need to explain that, in concentration camps, people are unjustly sought out and confined. This isn’t what is happening at the border. Migrants are illegally crossing our border. Most are asylum seekers, thus pending trial, so your expert definition doesn’t apply. Your comments reveal total disregard for our sovereignty & a deep ignorance that belittles the horrors of the Holocaust. If you’re worried about conditions at the border, why don’t you do something about it & support @RepMikeRogersAL’s bill securing billions in humanitarian aid?”

Even one Canadian who considers himself a liberal also took issue with Ocasio-Cortez, writing, “I’m not a shrieking republican. I am a left of centre member of the canadian liberal party. And I find your use of the phrase ‘concentration camp’ utterly baffling. In my opinion it is inappropriate and detracts from otherwise legitimate criticism of what is going on. And I don’t give a flying s*** what ‘historically’ ivory tower academics called it, today it is firmly associated with the Holocaust and the Nazi extermination of the Jews. The far left is so hell bent on labeling everything in the worst terms possible they lose sight of the debate.”

Crowder issued a tweet that was simple and powerful:

A new CNN poll acknowledges something that must terribly bother the network: 54% of respondents in the poll believe that President Trump will win reelection, a huge eleven-point hike from last December, when that number was 43%.

Speaking on CNN on Wednesday, host John Berman said disbelievingly, “They believe the president, despite everything, will win reelection next year.” He added, shocked, “What’s more, that number is up double digits since December.”

Turning to his panel, Berman asked CNN political director David Chalian, “David, I want to start with you. This is always an interesting number to me ‘cause often it does go hand-in-hand with success; people end up knowing who’s going to win beforehand often. What do you attribute this shift to?”

Chalian noted that the rise in Trump’s numbers largely were responses from dispirited Democrats who reluctantly see the strength of Trump’s chances:

The psychology of the voters, right? People also like to be with a winner, so it gives that you sense. If you look under the numbers, John, one of the things that you can attribute the increase in that perception to is actually to Democrats, to people who disapprove of Donald Trump’s job performance. They did not think he was going to win re-election, but we should be clear, three-quarters of them still don’t think that, now a quarter of Democrats in this poll believe he is going to win re-election. That’s up when we tested this in December, that’s up from 14%. So even though they’re rooting against it, they seem, Democrats, to be a little more of the mind that he may actually come out victorious.

Hilariously, Berman than asked, “Is that good?”

Chalian himself is no fan of Trump. As Caleb Howe noted last November, Chalian ripped into President Trump after Trump alleged fraud and misconduct in the vote count and recount in Florida. Chalian stated, “I think that he is dismantling a fundamental pillar of our democracy, which is the sanctity of the vote. And he wants to discredit election results that he thinks aren’t in his favor. His dismantling of institutional pillars of our Democracy–It’s just so offensive to hear him talk this way.”

Howe pointed out that Chalian didn’t mention numerous Democrats or media personalities who had questioned the voting results of last November’s election, including CNN’s own Van Jones, writing of the Georgia gubernatorial race and failed Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams, “Her campaign was so good, and she is so compelling, that Abrams would almost certainly be governor-elect right now — if the election had been fair. As the final votes are tallied, Kemp enjoys a razor-thin margin — but it is the product of misconduct so brazen and unethical that UN monitors would likely declare a stolen election if the contest were held in another country.”

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) ranted, “If Stacey Abrams (D) doesn’t win [the governor’s race] in Georgia, they stole it. It’s clear.” Brown added that Republicans “can’t win elections because there is way more of us than them. They can’t win elections fairly.”

Former DNC chairman and presidential candidate Howard Dean added, “This is a pattern in many places in Georgia. I am amazed that Kemp is so obvious about his efforts to steal the election. The failures of machines and personnel around the states are massive.”

Add in Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer: “In a democracy, no one—not even the President—can prevent the lawful counting of votes. We will not allow him or anyone else to steal this election.”

In what could be really bad news for Democrats, according to CNN’s Laura Jarrett, Attorney General William Barr is now drawing the net tighter around those people who may have targeted Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign; he’s working with the CIA, National Intelligence and the FBI to investigate surveillance issues related to the Trump campaign.

Jarrett reported that on Tuesday, President Trump told reporters he did not direct Barr to involve other agencies, saying, “I didn’t ask him to do that. I didn’t know it. But I think it’s a great thing that he did it. I saw it last night, and they want to look at how that whole hoax got started. You know what? I am so proud of our attorney general, that he is looking into it. I think it’s great.” U.S. attorney John Durham has joined Barr as the investigation gets underway; the DOJ’s Inspector General, Michael Horowitz, is also involved; he has been reviewing the surveillance warrant the FBI obtained targeting Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page as well as the FBI relying on the unverified dossier produced by British ex-spy Christopher Steele that targeted Trump.

Joseph diGenova, a former U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said last week that Horowitz found that Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant extensions against Page had been illegally obtained. Speaking on Fox Business, diGenova said Democrats were launching their investigations into President Trump to direct the public away from what Horowitz might find. He stated, “They are doing that as a diversionary tactic away from the inevitable conclusions of the DOJ inspector general, Michael Horowitz, who, by the way, we have learned has concluded that the final three FISA extensions were illegally obtained. The only question now is whether or not the first FISA was illegally obtained.”

DiGenova added that Horowitz “apparently, as a result of those disclosures … which he was unaware of — the bureau hid those memos from Horowitz — as a result of that they’re doing additional work on the first FISA. It may be that all four FISAs will have been obtained illegally.”

On May 1, Senator Lindsay Graham warned that an investigation would be coming, saying:

The other campaign. The other campaign was investigated, not by Mr. Mueller, by people within the Department of Justice. The accusation against the Clinton–Secretary Clinton was that she set a private server up somewhere in her house, and classified information was on it, to avoid the disclosure requirements and the transparency requirements required of being Secretary of State. So that was investigated. What do we know? We know that the person in charge of investigating hated Trump’s guts. I don’t know how Mr. Mueller felt about Trump, but I don’t think anybody on our side believes that he had a personal animosity toward the president to the point he couldn’t do his job …

We’re going to, in a bipartisan way, I hope deal with Russia, but when the Mueller report is put to bed, and it soon will be, this committee is going to look long and hard at how this all started. We’re going to look at the FISA warrant process. Did Russia provide Christopher Steele the information about Trump that turned out to be garbage that was used to get a warrant on an American citizen, and if so, how did the system fail? Was there a real effort between Papadopoulos and anybody in Russia to use the Clinton emails stolen by–stole by the Russians, or was that thought planted in his mind? I don’t know, but we’re going to look. And I can tell you this. If you change the names, you all would want to look, too. Everything I just said, just substitute Clinton for Trump and see what all these people with cameras would be saying out here about this.

On Friday, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan confirmed that the Pentagon has authorized an additional $1.5 billion to extend the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border 80 more miles.

Shanahan stated, according to Stars and Stripes: “The Department of Defense is fully engaged in addressing the crisis on our southwest border, with more than 4,000 servicemembers and 19 aircraft currently supporting the Department of Homeland Security. Today, I authorized the transfer of $1.5 billion toward the construction of more than 80 miles of border barrier. The funds were drawn from a variety of sources, including cost savings, programmatic changes, and revised requirements, and therefore will have minimal impact on force readiness.”

The additional $1.5 billion comes after the transfer of $1 billion for an additional 60 miles of wall in Yuma, Arizona and El Paso, Texas, that was made in March.

Fox News reports, “But the plan to divert Pentagon funding has sparked criticism from congressional Democrats, who accused Shanahan of not seeking approval to ‘reprogram’ the funds without congressional authority. Shanahan and other senior defense officials claimed in response they did not have to get permission from Congress despite the objections from Democratic lawmakers.”

The funds being transferred come from the Afghan Security Forces Fund, which describes itself as providing “assistance to the security forces of Afghanistan to include the provision of equipment, supplies, services, training, facility and infrastructure repair, renovation and construction, and funding.”

AP reported in late February that Shanahan visited the southern border and asserted, “How do we get out of treating the symptoms and get at the root of the issue? I don’t want to just add resources and not fix the problem.” AP wrote, “Shanahan said he was not volunteering the Pentagon to take over any part of border control, which is the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security. But he said his visit led him to question whether there should be a ‘wholesale redesign’ of the way border control is done by the federal government.”

The Hill reported on Friday that Democrats would fight against transferring money for the wall:

The House Appropriations Committee on Thursday advanced a bill that would prohibit using military construction funds on a border wall. The prohibition, included in the fiscal 2020 military construction and veterans affairs appropriations bill, would prohibit funds from the 2015 through 2020 fiscal years from being “obligated, expended or used to design, construct, or carry out a project to construct a wall, barrier, fence, or road” along the U.S. southern border. And House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) told Shanahan during a panel hearing in March that the Pentagon would likely lose the reprogramming authority if it moved forward with the $1 billion funding transfer.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) added, “Funds for the wall should not be stolen from previously approved vital military construction projects that are a higher priority than any wall … Military construction dollars should be used only for the purpose they are provided, which is to support the Department of Defense’ mission, service members and their families.”

On Sunday, The Wall Street Journal reported that advisors to President Trump are not going to refrain from using the findings of the Mueller report against the Democrats; the Journal quoted Bryan Lanza, a deputy communications director for Trump’s 2016 campaign, asserting, “You better believe we’re going to bludgeon them.”

In line with that perspective, the Trump campaign released a video to supporters on Sunday titled, “Collusion Hoax” that showed various Democratic politicians accusing Trump of collusion with the Russians as the screen slammed them as “WRONG” with a buzzer going off. At the end of the 40-second video, the screen advised viewers to text “WITCHHUNT” to a campaign number to sign up for alerts.

The video begins with the screen flashing the message, “Dems Hyped Collusion With No Evidence.” The next shot shows the message, “Mueller Proves Them “ followed by the word “Wrong” added as a buzzer goes off.

The next shot shows a clip of Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut saying, “The evidence is pretty clear that there was collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians.” The screen goes to a freeze frame as the word “wrong” and the buzzer again appear.

Next on the list of Democrats, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), who has been attempting for the last two years to get his face ubiquitously before the cameras by focusing on supposed Trump collusion with the Russians,. In April 2017, after CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Schiff, “Can you say definitively that there was collusion, there were people affiliated with the Trump campaign who were working with Russians to time the release of damaging information about Hillary Clinton that had been hacked – either from John Podesta or the DNC?” Schiff responded, “I don’t think we can say anything definitively at this point. We are still at the very early stage of the investigation. The only thing I can say is that it would be irresponsible for us not to get to the bottom of this.”

But by August 2018, appearing on CBS’ Face the Nation, Schiff bloviated, “I think there’s plenty of evidence of collusion or conspiracy in plain sight.” The screen shows Schiff making that statement, followed by “Wrong” and the buzzer.

Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell of California is next to be targeted, as the clip shows him saying, “We saw strong evidence of collusion.” Wrong + buzzer.

Next: Democrat Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who threatened the very night last November the Democrats won back the House of Representatives, “This election was about accountability. Donald Trump may not like hearing it but for the first time, his administration is going to be held accountable. He’s going to learn that he’s not above the law.” The video shows him snapping, “Well, we know there was collusion with people in the campaign.” Wrong + buzzer.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez: “I think a mountain of evidence of collusion between the campaign and the Russians.” Wrong + buzzer.

The screen reads, “The Collusion Hoax. Text ‘Witchhunt’ to 88022.”

It must be murder for them to admit it, but suddenly Western European leaders are realizing President Trump was right about ditching the Iran nuclear treaty.

On Tuesday, diplomats from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France expressed their concern because of an Iranian medium-range ballistic missile test on Saturday.

The U.S. government stated that the missile Iran tested could reach Europe and the Middle East. According to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the missile could carry multiple warheads and violated Security Council Resolution 2231, which instructed Iran to refrain from “any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”

That Security Council resolution was the implementation of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA). President Trump walked away from the deal last May, although China, France, Germany, Russia and the U.K. stayed with the deal.

But after the missile test, the U.K. and France called a closed-door meeting of the Security Council. The government of France stated, “France is concerned by the launch of a medium-range ballistic missile by Iran on Saturday. It condemns this provocative and destabilizing act. France reiterates that the Iranian ballistic missile program is not in compliance with UNSCR 2231 (2015). It calls on Iran to immediately cease any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be able to carry nuclear weapons, including launches using ballistic missile technology.”

As Fox News reports, the European ambassadors joined in expressing their concern:

U.K. Ambassador Karen Pierce called the actions “part and parcel of Iran’s destabilizing activities in the region.” Her comments echo U.K. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who said Saturday that he was “deeply concerned by Iran’s actions,” even as he reiterated support for the nuclear deal. “Provocative, threatening and inconsistent with UNSCR 2231. Our support for JCPoA in no way lessens our concern at Iran’s destabilising missile programme and determination that it should cease,” he tweeted.

Dutch Ambassador Karel van Oosterom added, “This kind of ballistic missile activity is inconsistent with the JCPoA , especially Annex B which calls on Iran not to engage in these kinds of activities.” Even French Ambassador François Delattre avowed the test was “inconsistent” with the resolution, urging Iran to “immediately cease any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be able to carry nuclear weapons, including launches using ballistic missile technology.”

Still, the group displayed its usual pusillanimous attitude when it came to Iran, with the resolution stating it only “calls upon” Iran to stop its ballistic tests instead of demanding a cessation.

On Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, in her typically blunt manner, stated that the ballistic test was “dangerous and concerning, but not surprising” adding, “The United States has repeatedly warned the world about Iran’s deliberate efforts to destabilize the Middle East and defy international norms. The international community cannot keep turning a blind eye every time Iran blatantly ignores Security Council resolutions. If the Security Council is serious about holding Iran accountable and enforcing our resolutions, then at a minimum we should be able to deliver a unanimous condemnation of this provocative missile test.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), echoed, “The United States has only begun to reverse the damage done by Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, which gave the Ayatollahs the resources and diplomatic breathing room to build more and better ballistic missiles. The last round of sanctions, while important, clearly failed to deter Iran from advancing their missile program. It’s time to totally cut off Iran from the global financial system and deny them the resources they’re using to threaten us and our allies.”

In an article printed in the Harvard Business Review, a UCLA professor argued that there are too many white male firefighters in America.

Corinne Bendersky, Professor of Management and Organizations at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, who does research on “gender bias,” posited “black firefighters still face challenges with social exclusion and explicit racism,” and “firefighters tend to default to a reductive set of traits (physical strength evaluated through strict fitness tests, for example) that serve to maintain white men’s dominance in the fire service.”

In addition, Bendersky opined that because 64% of calls for firefighters are triggered by medical emergencies, being male is often insufficient, writing, “To succeed as a firefighter, stereotypically masculine traits like brawn and courage are simply not enough. Firefighters also need the intellectual, social, and emotional skills required to deliver medical emergency aid, support each other through traumatic experiences, and engage intimately with the communities they serve.”

Bendersky noted that 96% of career firefighters are men, and 82% are white. She claims, “Many fire departments recognize that their lack of diversity as a problem and say they’re committed to increasing racial and gender diversity.” She cites research she has done that prompted her to write, “when the topic of female firefighters came up, the importance of physical strength was consistently and spontaneously invoked to justify the relative absence of women in the fire service, but the importance of compassion (a female-stereotyped trait) was rarely, if ever, brought up to argue for bringing more women into the profession.”

Bendersky claimed she heard women firefighters say, “I have to prove myself on every call, every time” and “Everyone expects you to fail.”

Bendersky segued to sexuality issues: “Openly gay men are exceedingly rare in the fire service; the few who are out of the closet face severe social exclusion.” She writes, “Ultimately, most firefighters who are not heterosexual white men must be extremely resilient to overcome relentless scrutiny and exclusion in their careers.”

Bendersky offered her advice: “I also encourage leaders to elevate the value of skills that align with stereotypes about women and minorities through concrete actions. For example, to promote the social and emotional strengths commonly associated with women, one might look for ways to acknowledge and celebrate crew members who demonstrate what we call the ‘heart and soul’ of a firefighter in the station and out in the field.”

Then she intimated that black Americans are generally in better humor than whites:

Joviality — defined as “markedly good humor” and one that helps process emotional trauma — is a positive trait associated with black Americans somewhat more than with white Americans, so explaining that a jovial culture can increase crew effectiveness may reduce some of the skepticism about and exclusion of black firefighters.

Bendersky concluded:

Hopefully, the departments that have implemented my training approach with will see continued improvement in their efforts to confront the diversity challenges of the fire service, and will serve as examples to others across the country, as well as different types of organizations that would like to become more meaningfully diverse. Perhaps most importantly, it will make a difference in the careers of talented and hardworking firefighters.
