Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) criticized President Donald Trump on Wednesday for endangering her own safety by supposedly dog-whistling to white supremacists to start a civil war over the House’s impeachment inquiry.

“[Trump] should not be going after anybody,” Waters told MSNBC host Ali Velshi. “He is the president of the United States of America. He is setting some of us up to be killed. I have death threats constantly.”

“There are a number of people who have been convicted for threatening to kill me, and when he does that he’s dog-whistling to the white supremacists, the KKK, and the dangerous people,” she continued. “We have stories about many of those white supremacists who do nothing but practice how they’re going to be involved in a civil war and fight against this government. This president is irresponsible in so many ways aside from making us a target of these white supremacists.”

Waters’ complaints come in stark contrast to her now-infamous calls for people to publicly harass members of the Trump administration in response to the White House’s long-standing immigration policy.

“Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up,” Waters was recorded shouting at her supporters in June 2018. “And if you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station you get out and you create a crowd, and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”

At the time, Trump responded to her rallying cries, calling her an “extraordinarily low IQ person.” The California lawmaker is an outspoken critic of the president and was one of the first members of Congress to call for his impeachment.

“Yes, absolutely he has called me names as he has called many others names,” Waters told Velshi. “I have been at this almost two years because I understand the danger of this president. I understand that he has colluded with Russia. I understand that he has embraced Putin. I also understand that he really wants to be and act like a dictator. I’m very worried about our entire government. I’m worried about his entire administration.”

She further praised House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for finally moving forward with an impeachment inquiry and defended remarks that she herself made calling for the president to be “imprisoned” and “placed in solitary confinement.”

“Most people know me and know what I’ve been doing for the last two years,” Waters said. “They know I’ve spoken about the president’s lack of understanding or appreciation for the Constitution. He doesn’t care about the democracy and how he has undermined all of those who are trying so hard to make this democracy stronger.”

“So, I think people know me,” she continued. “And I think that they know I have the best interest of this country at heart and that I’ve worked very hard and that I’ve spoken truth to power in ways that many others didn’t even have the courage to do it.”

President Donald Trump predicted on Thursday that one of the three Democratic presidential candidates who is currently polling as a top three contender will end up winning the party’s nomination for the presidency.

“Look, they all have their weaknesses and their strengths. I think that they’re very different – you certainly have a lot of different voices up there,” Trump responded when a reporter asked which Democratic presidential hopeful would be his strongest opponent.

Trump further anticipated that the Democratic nomination will likely end up going to former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), or Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) since they have been consistently polling so far ahead of the rest of the primary field.

“But it would look to me like it would be Elizabeth Warren and it looks like Joe maybe will be able to get there, maybe not, I don’t know,” the president said. “And certainly Bernie is there, he’s number three. But I think that’s because they’re so far in the lead, the three of them.”

Accordingly, Biden has been outperforming both Warren and Sanders by an average of nearly 10 points. The former vice president has been consistently polling in the low-30s to mid-20s, with the progressive duo both hovering in the high-teens. While Warren has been gaining momentum, Sanders still has a razor-thin edge over his progressive counterpart by less than one percent, according to Real Clear Politics’ average polling data.

“And if you remember — I’m sure you forget my Republican primaries, but I went to the lead at the very beginning and stayed there,” Trump continued to reporters. “You know, if you don’t make a really major mistake, he should be able to make it, I would imagine Biden would be able to make it if he doesn’t make any major mistakes. We’ll see what happens.”

Trump’s remarks came as he was preparing to travel to Baltimore, Maryland to speak at the House Republican members’ annual retreat. Prior to boarding Marine One, he was asked about his expectations regarding the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) third primary debate, which would be kicking off over the next few hours.

“I don’t expect too much difference, I mean, you have three people who are leading,” Trump replied. “I sort of think that those three people are going to take it to the end – it’s going to be one of those three I think. But you never know in politics, do we? You know better than I, you never know in politics.”

The president also lamented the fact that he would not be able to watch the debate live due to his scheduling conflict with the retreat, but he noted that he would catch up on the event afterward.

“It’s too bad I’m going to miss it, I’m going to have to have it somehow taped,” Trump said. “I didn’t even tell them about that, so many it’s not that important, but it is important. Look, it’s going to be very interesting, I look forward to going home, I’m going to have to watch it as a rerun because many of you are coming to Baltimore with me.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s team pushed back on allegations of sexual misconduct on Monday by blaming “right wing trolls” for circulating out-of-context photographs.

“These smears and forgeries have existed in the dark recesses of the internet for a while,” Bill Russo, a Biden spokesman, said in a statement. “And to this day, right wing trolls and others continue to exploit them.”

Former Nevada Assemblywoman Lucy Flores came out with her allegations against the prospective presidential candidate Friday in the New York Magazine op-ed “An Awkward Kiss Changed How I Saw Joe Biden.” She claimed Biden, who was campaigning on her behalf at the time, kissed her and smelled her hair without consent.

“I felt him get closer to me from behind. … He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head. My brain couldn’t process what was happening. I was embarrassed. I was shocked. I was confused,” Flores wrote.

“There is a Spanish saying, ‘tragame tierra,’ it means, ‘earth, swallow me whole.’ I couldn’t move and I couldn’t say anything,” she continued. “I wanted nothing more than to get Biden away from me.”

Biden immediately issued the following statement:

Neither then, nor in the years since, did he or the staff with him at the time have an inkling that Ms. Flores had been at any time uncomfortable, nor do they recall what she describes. But Vice President Biden believes that Ms. Flores has every right to share her own recollection and reflections, and that it is a change for better in our society that she has the opportunity to do so. He respects Ms. Flores as a strong and independent voice in our politics and wishes her only the best.

Flores revealed two days later that “politics was definitely the impetus” for coming forward with her accusation, noting that “the reason why we’re having these conversations about Vice President Joe Biden is because he’s considering running for president.”

While Biden has not formally revealed if he will run for president, he has been polling as the top contender for the Democratic nomination, and is expected to announce his bid in April.
