The illegal immigrant population has reached a record 14.451 million in the United States despite border closures and travel bans, and it could jump much higher under President Biden’s pro-immigrant policies, according to a new analysis.

The report shared with Secrets Wednesday said that the population of illegal immigrants increased from 14.3 million last year as many crossed the border expecting to be protected by the Biden plan and others remained after their visas expired.

In its latest tally, the Federation for American Immigration Reform also estimated that the cost of this population to taxpayers is $133.7 billion, up nearly $2 billion from last year.

The states with the highest population of illegal immigrants are California, Texas, Florida, and New York.

“Even amidst a global pandemic, where a number of immigration and border restrictions have been put in place, illegal immigration has continued to unacceptably climb,” said Dan Stein, the president of FAIR, which advocates for hard-line reforms.

The group’s report twins with another analysis that suggested Biden’s proposals, which are considered much more liberal than former President Barack Obama’s, could lure in 50 million more illegal and legal migrants.

“It is clear that the Biden administration’s immigration proposals, including a mass amnesty for the nation’s illegal alien population, an attempt to freeze deportations for at least 100 days that thankfully has been held up by the courts, and construction halts of the southern border wall, are motivating illegal aliens to enter into the country illegally. These figures are only likely to surge in the next few years,” said Stein.

The new administration has worked with unusual speed to dismantle former President Donald Trump’s campaign against legal and illegal immigration, notably stopping the construction of a border wall and handcuffing immigration law enforcement.

The president and an overwhelming majority of Democrats took offense to Trump’s actions (and language) on immigration, and Biden emphasized that when he signed several pro-immigration executive orders.

“Those actions are a stain on our national conscience and are inconsistent with our long history of welcoming people of all faiths and no faith at all,” said Biden.

A federal court in Texas on Tuesday said that the president went too far in freezing deportations in a case that is expected to face other legal challenges.

An expert with another reform group, the Center for Immigration Studies, said from the border Tuesday that immigrants on the Mexican side of the border are already surging over, believing that the new administration is going to look away.

Todd Bensman, a senior national security fellow for CIS, said that “a lot of them are getting through.”

FAIR said that there are several reasons why the illegal population increased. Among them:

  • There are more sanctuary jurisdictions throughout the U.S.
  • More corporations are using illegal labor.
  • Cities and states are offering more benefits to illegal immigrants, including welfare, tuition, COVID-19 treatment, and driver’s licenses.
