Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) noted when he had the opportunity to question Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett that the desk where she sat on Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee was virtually empty.

“Most of us have multiple notebooks and notes, and books, and things like that in front of us,” Cornyn said. “Can you hold up what you have been referring to in answering our questions?”

Barrett held up a small pad of blank paper.

“Is there anything on it?” Cornyn asked.

“The letterhead that says United States Senate,” Barrett said.

“That’s impressive,” Cornyn said, and added that it was not impressive that Democrats questioning Barrett implied that she could not be unbiased and would violate her oath of office.

“Judge, the best I can understand the objections to your nomination is not to your qualifications, your experience, or training, but it’s that you have, or you will, violate your oath of office,” Cornyn said. “I find that terribly insulting.”

“They suggest that you cannot be unbiased in deciding a case you have note even participated in yet,” Cornyn said. “I find that insulting as well.”

President Donald Trump said Sunday that the Department of Education (DOE) is investigating California public schools including the 1619 Project — a radical revisionist history plan promoted by the New York Times which claims the United States was founded in 1619 when the first slaves arrived in Virginia — in their curricula.

“Department of Education is looking at this. If so, they will not be funded!” Trump tweeted.

Sen. Tom Cotton, (R-AR), introduced a bill in July that would have addressed schools’ use of the 1619 project in a similar manner to that Trump proposed, Fox News reported. “That bill proposed denying funds to any school that uses the 1619 Project in its curriculum.”

In a statement, Cotton called the 1619 project “a racially divisive, revisionist account of history that denies the noble principles of freedom and equality on which our nation was founded.”

Ironically, the project, created by Nikole Hannah-Jones, received the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for commentary and not the award for history.

The fictional account claims that the colonists fought the Revolutionary War not to liberate the colonies from British rule, but instead to preserve slavery.

The Wall Street Journal, in a recent editorial board opinion, wrote about what it called “California’s radical indoctrination” and said it will not only include the 1619 ideology, but will take it to new extremes:

The largest state in the union is poised to become one of the first to mandate ethnic studies for all high-school students, and the model curriculum makes the radical “1619 project” look moderate and balanced.

Last year California’s Assembly passed its ethnic-studies bill known as AB 331 by a 63-8 vote. Then the state department of education put forward a model curriculum so extreme and ethnocentric that the state Senate’s Democratic supermajority balked. The curriculum said among other things that “within Ethnic Studies, scholars are often very critical of the system of capitalism as research has shown that Native people and people of color are disproportionately exploited within the system.”

The bill was put on ice, but protests and riots in recent months gave Sacramento’s mavens of racial division more leverage. The education department delivered a new draft model curriculum this month, and AB 331 has been revived. It passed a Senate committee Aug. 20 and is expected to go before the full body soon. If Gov. Gavin Newsom signs it, the legislation would require all school districts to offer a semester-long ethnic studies class starting in 2025.

The model curriculum posted online states that the course will “build new possibilities for post-imperial life that promotes collective narratives of transformative resistance” and is designed for K-12.

“It suggests teachers provide ‘examples of systems of power, which can include economic systems like capitalism and social systems like patriarchy.’ Students can then be taught ‘the four ‘I’s of oppression —ideological, institutional, interpersonal and internalized,’” the Journal wrote. “What about the fifth ‘I’ of indoctrination?”

Topics in the curriculum include racism, LGBTQ rights, immigration rights, access to quality health care, and income inequality,” all much more related to current politics and ideology than to U.S. history.

“Students will write a paper detailing certain events in American history,” the curriculum stated, “that have led to Jewish and Irish Americans gaining racial privilege.”

The Journal, called it “ugly stuff” that will enforce “identity politics” with a goal of “replacing civic nationalism as America’s creed.”

The Journal editorial board called on lawmakers in Sacramento to stop the curriculum before it is too late.

Barry Sternlicht, a global investor, said on Tuesday that he believes there will be a mass exodus from U.S. cities to suburban neighborhoods and that fleeing from violent protests is a more motivating factor than the fear of the coronavirus.

“There’s hundreds of thousands of people looking for suburban homes, and I would say it’s not as driven by the Covid situation as it is safety and law and order, and that is now pervasive across the big cities of the United States, sadly,” Sternlicht told CBNC’s Squawk Box.

Sternlicht, who is the CEO of Starwood Capitol, said tax policy is another factor in the shift from urban to suburban neighborhoods, including New York City.

“If you tax the wealthy even more in New York City … and they leave, then the social net has to be absorbed by the remaining residents and you can force them to leave,” Sternlicht said.

Sternlicht also criticized former Vice President and presidential candidate Joe Biden’s tax increase plan.

“The Biden tax plan, which I’m happy to pay more taxes, but I don’t think this increase in the capital gains rate is a good idea for investment in our country, which we need to do,” he said.

If Biden’s plan were put in place “you’re talking 60 percent plus taxes on the wealthy in New York City, and they will leave,” Sternlicht said.

Sternlicht, whose headquarters is in Miami, said people are flocking to Florida.

“I’ve become a real estate broker for Miami,” Sternlicht said. “I keep sending friends down and showing them houses they can buy, and they’re buying.”

“This is one of the greatest moves to the suburbs from urban areas since the 1950s or the ’60s,” “Shark Tank” investor Robert Herjavec said last month on CNBC. “I recently moved out of Los Angeles into a suburban area, and I can tell you on a very personal level, my area is on fire.”

“Some people note that major metropolitan areas in the U.S. had already been seeing their growth slow prior to this year and, they say, trends that had already been underway before the outbreak may have only been accelerated,” CNBC reported.

“What the pandemic has done is taken family formulation moves that might have been made over the next one, two, three, four, five years and compressed them into one, two, three months,” Richard Florida, a University of Toronto professor who studies cities, said last month on CNBC.

A large majority of Americans agree with President Donald Trump’s decision to reverse an Obama-era regulation designed to bring “diversity” to neighborhoods through incorporating low-income housing, according to poll of 1,000 likely voters.

Rasmussen Reports found that 83 percent of respondents said the federal government should not play a role in deciding where people live. Just 10 percent disagreed.

Although less than the 83 percent of voters in 2015, when President Barack Obama was ready to announce the regulation, said it is not the federal government’s job to diversity neighborhoods by mixing people of different financial demographics, 65 percent in this poll agreed.

The Obama-era rule mostly targeted more affluent, suburban neighborhoods with single family homes.

But 23 percent now say government should play a role in diversifying neighborhoods, up from 8 percent five years ago.

Rasmussen reported on the political and racial divides of its poll:

Democrats are stronger advocates of efforts by the government to diversify neighborhoods than Republicans and voters not affiliated with either major party are. But even among voters in former President Obama’s party, 56 percent say it’s not the government’s job to diversify neighborhoods, a view shared by 73 percent of Republicans and 68 percent of unaffiliated voters.

Little changed from the previous survey is the 40 percent of all voters who say the racial or ethnic make-up of the neighborhood was important in deciding where they live now, with 19 percent who say it was Very Important. Fifty-nine percent (59 percent) say the racial and ethic make-up of the neighborhood was not important to their decision, including 28 percent who say it was Not At All Important.

For blacks (63 percent), the racial or ethnic make-up of their neighborhood was much more important than it was to whites (35 percent) and other minority voters (44 percent). Twenty percent (20 percent) of blacks and 21 percent of other minority voters feel the federal government should play a role in deciding where people can live, but just six percent (6 percent) of whites agree. Seventy-one percent (71 percent) of whites say it is not the government’s job to diversify neighborhoods, compared to 52 percent of blacks and 53 percent of other minority voters.

The poll was taken August 2-3, 2020, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.

Department of Interior Secretary David Bernhardt announced this week that the Trump administration is launching an effort to investigate the cold cases of scores of American Indian and Native Alaskan women who have disappeared.

The task forces also include top adviser to President Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump, and DOI Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Tara Katuk Sweeney.

DOI said according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Crime Information Center, there are some 1,400 unsolved cases of missing and murdered American Indians and Alaskan Native women in the United States – 136 cases are in Minnesota where the first task forces’ office opened.

The project began on November 26, 2019, when Trump signed Executive Order 13898.

“President Trump created a task force to support Tribal communities, reduce the staggering number of violent crimes committed against American Indians and Alaska Natives and closeout hundreds of cold cases,” Bernhardt said in the announcement. “The Trump Administration is committed to justice and working alongside these Tribal communities to restore peace and prosperity.”

“While visiting the great state of Minnesota with Secretary Bernhardt, we are advancing two top priorities for the administration: The Pledge to America’s Workers and supporting American Indian and Alaska Native communities,” Ivanka Trump said. “We are furthering President Trump’s commitment to forgotten men and women across our country and the Administration’s efforts to ensure that all Americans can live with dignity and the promise of a brighter future.”

“Today’s opening of the first Missing and Murdered Native Americans Cold Case office demonstrates the commitment of the Operation Lady Justice Task Force to achieving the mandate set out for it under President Trump’s executive order,” Sweeney said. “Cold cases in Indian Country will be addressed with determination and the understanding that the victims in these cases will be accorded some measure of dignity and compassion – not only for them, but for their survivors, as well.”

“President Trump’s Executive Order established the Operation Lady Justice Task Force, a multi-agency effort co-chaired by Secretary Bernhardt and U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr,” a press release about the initiative said. “Its purpose is to enhance the operation of the criminal justice system and address the staggering number of missing and murdered American Indian and Alaska Natives in Tribal communities.”

“The Cold Case Task Forces are in accordance with the President’s Executive Order and will be staffed with law enforcement personnel and newly appointed special agents from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services (BIA-OJS), along with personnel from other Operation Lady Justice Task Force partners including tribal law enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Offices of the U.S. Attorneys,” the press release said.

In addition to Minnesota, Cold Case Task Forces office openings will take place in the following cities:

  • Rapid City, SD
  • Billings, MT
  • Nashville, TN
  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Anchorage, AK

House Democrats have passed legislation to remove 15 statues because of their connection to the Confederacy, slavery, or white supremacy, 13 of whom were Democrats.

“It’s time to sweep away the last vestiges of Jim Crow and the dehumanizing of individuals because of the color of their skin that intruded for too long on the sacred spaces of our democracy,” Steny Hoyer (D-MD), House Majority Leader, said in a Roll Call report on the legislation.

“The American people know, these names have to go. These names are white supremacists that said terrible things about our country,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said in a Just the News report.

The bill only names four of the offending statues — Roger B. Taney, the fifth chief justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, a Democrat, who authored the Dred Scott decision; John Caldwell Calhoun, a Democrat who served as vice president and defender of slavery; James Paul Clarke, a Democrat, who was loyal to his Confederate state Arkansas, which he served as governor and represented in Congress; and Charles Brantley Aycock, a Democrat who was prominent in the Democratic Party’s “white supremacy” Solid South campaigns.

Of the other 11 statues reportedly facing removal, nine were Democrats:

  • Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America and former Democrat U.S. senator from Mississippi
  • James Zachariah George, former Democrat U.S. senator from Mississippi and member of the Mississippi Secession Convention
  • Wade Hampton, lieutenant general of the Confederacy and former Democrat governor of South Carolina
  • John E. Kenna, member of the Confederate States Army, former Democrat congressman and U.S. senator from West Virginia
  • Uriah Milton Rose, chairman of the Resolutions Committee of the Arkansas Democratic Party
  • Edmund Kirby Smith, general for the Confederate States Army who has no recorded political party affiliation
  • Alexander Hamilton Stephens, vice president of the Confederate States who served as a Democrat congressman from Georgia and governor of Georgia
  • Zebulon Baird Vance, member of the Confederate Army and former Democrat governor of North Carolina
  • Joseph Wheeler, commander in the Confederate Army and former Democratic congressman from Alabama
  • Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate States Army, no party affiliation
  • Edward Douglass White, member of Confederate Army, former Louisiana Democratic senator and associate justice of the Supreme Court

Roll Call also reported that the bust of John C. Breckinridge, a Kentucky senator and vice president in the Buchanan administration, who was expelled in 1861 for joining the Confederacy, would also be removed.

The bill calls for $5 million to be appropriated for the removal.

The Danish toymaker Lego has asked retailers to pull promotional materials for some play figures in response to the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, including all police figures, firefighters, and accessories, and even the White House.

The Toy Book obtained the email sent to retailers:

The Toy Book has received a copy of an email sent to affiliate marketers by Rakuten Linkshare on behalf of the LEGO Group. The email requests removal of product listings and features for more than 30 LEGO building sets, Minifigures, and accessories that include representation of police officers, firefighters, criminals, emergency vehicles, and buildings. Sets include the LEGO City Police Station, Fire Station, Police Dog Unit, Patrol Car, Fire Plane, Mobile Command Center, Police Highway Arrest, and many more. Even the LEGO City Donut Shop Opening set — which includes Police Officer “Duke DeTain” and “Crook” Minifigures — roleplay items including a Police Handcuffs & Badge Set, and the adult builder LEGO Creator version of The White House made the removal list.

The website also reported that a spokesperson with Lego responded to their request for comment:

We requested that our affiliate partners refrain from posting promotional LEGO content as part of our decision to respect #BlackOutTuesday and pause posting content on our social media channels in response to the tragic events in the US. We regret any misunderstanding and will ensure that we are clearer about our intentions in the future.

Lego has also joined the long list of corporate virtue-signaling, according to the U.K.’s Metro:

Lego has donated $4 million in a bid to support black children and fight racial inequality, in the wake of the protests taking place around the world. Protests were sparked across the US after George Floyd died during an arrest, when white police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes, despite his insistence that he couldn’t breathe. Following his death, people have taken to the streets to march in support of Black Lives Matter. And Lego has now pledged millions of dollars to fight racism and educate kids about equality.

Toy Book also reported that Lego stores were among those businesses attacked and looted in New York earlier this week.

The Insider website reported that while Lego’s decision is being praised, some are critical because they believe it is only temporary. “People are reading this tweet as if they’re pulling police-based Lego products. They’re not; they’re temporarily pausing their advertising of such products,” one tweet read.

“It’s not clear yet if that means the company plans to pull the products off the market,” Insider wrote.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to clarify that the company asked retailers to pull promotional materials for these products, not actually take merchandise off their shelves.

President Donald Trump’s administration has spent 2019 making significant strides in accomplishing his America First agenda.

Here are seven agency success stories that have taken place this year:

#1 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD):

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the leadership of Dr. Ben Carson is one of the most prolific in accomplishments, or at least in making them public. The six-page report is divided into these categories: Advancing Economic Opportunity, Protecting Taxpayers, Reducing Regulatory Barriers, Funding Disaster Recovery at Historic Levels, Serving the Nation’s Most Vulnerable, and Spurring Reinvestment in Communities.

The details can be read here, but the aforementioned categories reveal that HUD is busy putting the president’s American First policies in place.

#2 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA):

The United States Department of Agriculture released the announcement of its 2019 accomplishments on December 19:

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today applauded the accomplishments made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) over the past year. USDA has continued enacting President Trump’s goals of regulatory reform, streamlining government, and refocusing USDA to be customer oriented.

“At USDA it is our honor to work on behalf of America’s farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers. This was a tough year with historic weather damage and unjustified trade retaliation. Our goal was to ‘Do Right and Feed Everyone’ by implementing much needed farm bill programs, enacting President Trump’s Support Package for Farmers, and continuing to feed and clothe this nation and the world,” said Secretary Perdue. “As we look to 2020, we want to build upon trade accomplishments like the Phase 1 Deal with China, USMCA, and Japan, and open up new markets to help sell the bounty of American agriculture, all while removing the burden of government regulations from the backs of hardworking Americans.”

In May, Secretary Perdue stepped foot in Utah making it his 50th state visited since becoming Secretary. Since being sworn in, he has traveled nearly 160,000 miles, held over 220 town hall discussions and roundtables, and visited nearly 100 farms across the country listening to America’s farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers. Throughout his travels, Secretary Perdue has met with a number of folks who have had specific problems when it comes to working with the federal government. The Secretary has taken those concerns back to Washington, D.C. and has worked to deliver concrete solutions to the problems facing farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers. Watch this video to hear from some of the people Secretary Perdue has delivered for since visiting them and check out this Medium website to learn more about Secretary Perdue’s journey to all 50 states.

#3 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE):

The United States Department of Energy also had many accomplishments in 2019. It’s report, published on December 10, can be read here.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Established the Artificial Intelligence and Technology Office
  • Developed and Identified the Energy Cybersecurity Workforce of Today and Tomorrow
  • Led Emergency Response through the its Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response team, which “was activated for 79 days to date in 2019 and played an integral role in restoration, recovery, and energy security efforts in at least six states.”
  • Established the Equity in Energy Initiative to help underserved communities.
  • Announced the DOE Energy-Water Desalination Hub as part of the White House Water Security Grand Challenge: “DOE announced nearly $100 million for the National Alliance for Water Innovation to lead a DOE Energy-Water Desalination Hub, which will address water security issues in the United States.”
  • “Over the past year, DOE has made significant progress in the treatment and disposal of nuclear waste, and in the fulfillment of its promise to do so.”
  • Resumed activities in the uranium leasing program as part of Trump’s agenda of providing uninterrupted domestic uranium production.

The DOE also is home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners:

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham, and Akira Yoshino “for the development of lithium-ion batteries.” Both Goodenough and Whittingham are longtime DOE Office of Science-supported researchers who have helped the Office of Science and the Department chart an effective path forward in transformative research on energy storage.

#4 U.S. Department of Labor (DOL):

The U.S. Department of Labor did not release a list of accomplishments as such but issued several press releases on New Year’s Eve revealing its year-long efforts to protect American workers. The headlines included:

  • Judge Orders Michigan Landscaping Company to Pay Misclassified Employees $118,426 in Back Wages and Damages
  • U.S. Department of Labor Investigation Uncovers Minimum Wage, Overtime, Child Labor Violations at West Texas Restaurant
  • U.S. Department of Labor Investigation Recovers $541,597 in Wages for Workers with Disabilities at Alabama Facilities
  • Pool Company Pays Penalties for Child Labor Violations Following a U.S. Department of Labor Investigation
  • U.S. Department of Labor Investigation Results in Pennsylvania Landscaping Company Paying $74,290 in Back Wages and Penalties For H-2B Visa Program Violations
  • U.S. Department of Labor Recovers $130,000 for Employees of San Marcos, Texas Security Company to Resolve Minimum Wage, Overtime Violations

#5 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is pare to the U.S. Department of Commerce, summarized its 2019 annual accomplishments report:

For NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R), Fiscal Year 2019 was a year filled with new challenges and new achievements. In FY19: we provided scientific support for 133 pollution-related incidents (including a historic World War II tanker); we provided disaster coordination during the 2019 hurricane season through the Disaster Preparedness Program; we helped to settle seven pollution cases, resulting in $28 million for natural resource restoration; and we made major advances in data management.

Each year, we put annual report as an overview of the efforts in oil and chemical spill response, shoreline restoration, marine debris reduction, and the many other tasks OR&R accomplished. These accomplishments show our dedication to science-based solutions for protecting and restoring natural resources from coastal hazards.

Here is the link to the 2019 Accomplishments Report.

#6 U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS):

Ken Cuccinelli, principal deputy director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said this about his agency’s accomplishments in 2019:

FY 2019 has been a historic year for USCIS and we have achieved many of President Trump’s goals to make our immigration system work better for America. As an agency, we have worked hand-in-hand with our fellow DHS components to answer President Trump’s call to address the ongoing crisis at our southern border. In the face of congressional inaction, we’ve taken significant steps to mitigate the loopholes in our asylum system, combat fraudulent claims and strengthen the protections we have in place to preserve humanitarian assistance for those truly in need of it. Meanwhile, the men and women of USCIS continue to administer our nation’s lawful immigration system, processing a large number of applications and requests while naturalizing 833,000 new U.S. citizens, an 11-year high.

In the coming year, we will continue to use every tool available to us to deliver on President Trump’s promises to the American people. We will continue to fulfill his goals to strengthen our nation’s strained immigration system and alleviate the crisis at our border while the agency continues to fairly and efficiently adjudicate the applications of those seeking lawful status in the U.S.

You can read the details of the report here.

#7 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA):

And while the Federal Emergency Management Agency, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, doesn’t have a list of accomplishments in 2019, it does reveal that while the Trump administration has been harshly criticized by the left for the response to Hurricanes Maria and Irma that struck Puerto Rico, the year ended with more aid to the the U.S. territory:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has launched an ad on social media with a message that he will end the impeachment effort against President Donald Trump should the House pass Articles of Impeachment and send them to the upper chamber.

“Nancy Pelosi is in the clutches of a leftwing mob,” McConnell said in a fundraising video on his re-election campaign Facebook page. “They finally convinced her to impeach the president.”

“All of you know your Constitution,” McConnell said. “The way that impeachment stops is with a Senate majority with me as majority leader.”

This comes after McConnell said he would have to at least initiate an impeachment trail in the Senate, as the Constitution requires.

“It’s a Senate rule related to impeachment, it would take 67 votes to change, so I would have no choice but to take it up,” McConnell said in a recent interview on CNBC. “How long you’re on it is a whole different matter.”

But in the fundraising ad posted late last week on his campaign Facebook page McConnell made it clear his goal for the impeachment effort in the Senate is to stop it in its tracks.

“McConnell is running for reelection next year and regularly plays up his ties to Trump, who easily carried Kentucky in 2016 and remains popular in the state,” AP said in its report on the ad. “McConnell campaign manager Kevin Golden said the impeachment inquiring has fired up the senator’s supporters.”

“Few issues energize conservative voters like liberal overreach and the Democrats’ latest outrageous attempt to impeach President Trump has activated our base to new heights,” Golden said in a statement issued on Saturday.

Black Lives Matter and other anti-Trump groups held a rally on the grounds of the Capitol on Tuesday to call for President Donald Trump to be censured for what he said about Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) controversial statement that “somebody did something” on 9-11.

People chanted ‘“Hands off Ilhan” and in a series of speeches blamed the president and Republicans for the rise of “white supremacy masked as white nationalism.”

Omar spoke at the event in praise of her homeland of Somalia and said the president and his Party are responsible for recent attacks on synagogues and mosques.

“At this moment, the occupant of the White House and his allies are doing everything that they can to distance themselves and misinform the public from the monsters that they created that is [sic] terrorizing the Jewish community and the Muslim community,” Omar said.

Omar said she is criticized because she is a Muslim woman.

“I also happen to be a refugee and immigrant from what they call one of the shithole countries,” Omar said, mocking the president for his alleged comments about war-torn countries like Somalia that drive their people out.

“The reality is that shithole country raised a very proud, dignified person,” Omar said. “Our circumstances may not always be perfect but that doesn’t lessen our humanity and I am not in the business of defending mine.”

Omar was not as complimentary of the United States.

“This is not going to be the country of the xenophobics,” Omar said. “This is not going to be the country of white people.”

“This is not going to be the country of the few,” Omar said. “This is the country of the many.”

“This is the country that was founded on the history of Native American genocide, on the backs of black slaves but also by immigrants,” Omar said.

According to her website: “Ilhan and her family fled the country’s civil war when she was eight-years-old. They lived in a refugee camp in Kenya for four years before coming to the United States, eventually settling in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis in 1997.”
