Republicans are preparing a full court press on former Vice President Joe Biden’s mental fitness for office in the event that he wins the Democratic presidential nomination, GOP sources told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Biden’s formerly rival candidates made a handful of references to the issue over the course of the campaign: former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro made a veiled jab at Biden’s mental fitness before walking it back; New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker questioned Biden’s “ability to carry the ball across the end line without fumbling;” and Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan said Biden is “declining” and lacks “clarity” when he speaks.

But by and large, Biden’s fellow Democrats have been hesitant to press the issue beyond making passing comments.

Republicans, meanwhile, are preparing to highlight questions about Biden’s fitness if he becomes the Democratic nominee.

A Trump campaign official told the DCNF that Biden’s “capacity” will be an issue in a potential general election matchup, echoing language used by Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly taken shots at Biden, saying the former vice president is “not playing with a full deck” and “has lost his fastball.” Trump’s campaign has already churned out videos highlighting Biden’s struggles.

WATCH:

Researchers at the Republican National Committee are keeping a running internal list of Biden’s verbal and mental miscues in preparation for the general election, an RNC source told the DCNF.

Examples abound.

Biden trailed off Monday while citing the Declaration of Independence, telling a crowd: “We hold these truths to be self-evident. All men and women created by the, you know, you know the thing.”

WATCH:

He told a South Carolina crowd on Feb. 25 that he’s “a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate” and that they should “vote for the other Biden” if they don’t like him. He also told a South Carolina crowd he is “looking forward to appointing the first African-American woman to the United States Senate.”

“We have to choose truth over facts,” Biden said in August 2019.

He claimed in the Feb. 25 debate that gun violence killed 150 million people — roughly half the U.S. population — in a decade.

Biden also said in a debate last September that he is “the vice president of the United States” and called Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders “the president” of the country.

Biden, whose campaign didn’t return a request for comment, has also struggled with places and dates.

“I love this place. Look, what’s not to like about Vermont in terms of the beauty of it?” he asked a New Hampshire crowd in August 2019.

Biden said in December that the Obama administration took place in 1976, before correcting himself. He appeared to confuse the 2016 and 2010 elections in a Feb. 20 town hall.

He has also confused both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former British Prime Minister Theresa May with Margaret Thatcher, who passed away in 2013 and whose reign as British prime minister ended in 1990.

A panel of gun owners laughed in the face of MSNBC host Ali Velshi when he asked what they thought of gun buyback proposals from Democratic politicians.

“Let me ask you about a proposal floated out there by a presidential candidate, or more, about gun buybacks. Who thinks that is a good idea?” Velshi asked. Several panelists immediately burst into laughter, while another mocked the question, joking: “I want mine for a million bucks, so if they’re willing to pay me that.”

Several members of the panel raised their hands when asked if Democratic gun control proposals would affect their vote in the 2020 election. Three panelists answered yes when asked if the gun issue would “most determine who you would vote for.”

“Oh yeah, yeah,” answered one voter, a black American man. “Don’t mess with my rights to protect my family by trying to take away my firearms.”

The panelists were also skeptical of some companies’ decisions to limit sales of firearms and ammunition to their customers. “People that want to get them and will get them, they’re still going to get them,” said one woman.

“So now this is their way out, to say, they can be the hero, we’re gonna get rid of all this stuff. Well, they were probably looking for a way to get rid of it anyway,” another panelist added.

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez promoted “prison abolition” in a pair of tweets Monday morning.

Ocasio-Cortez called for “a real conversation about decarceration [and] prison abolition in this country,” adding: “A cage is a cage is a cage. And humans don’t belong in them.”

“Prison abolition” is a radical left-wing movement to abolish prisons altogether—including for violent offenders. The Democratic Socialists of America, of which Ocasio-Cortez is a part, voted in August to create “a national Police & Prison Abolition Working Group.”

“Mass incarceration is our American reality. It is a system whose logic evolved from the same lineage as Jim Crow, American apartheid, & slavery,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter. “To end it, we have to change. That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country.”

“Yesterday morning I spoke with a woman who was thrown in Rikers as a teenager. Put in solitary confinement for MONTHS, aka torture. Force-fed pills. The conditions were so bad, she too had drank out of toilets,” she added. “A cage is a cage is a cage. And humans don’t belong in them.”

According to research by the Manhattan Institute’s Rafael A. Mangual, 60% of the inmates in state prisons—which house the overwhelming majority of prisoners across the country—”are serving time for murder, rape, assault, robbery, or burglary—four times the number convicted only of drug offenses.”

“We have more than enough room to close many of our prisons and explore just alternatives to incarceration,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in a follow-up tweet. “Our lawmaking process means we come to solutions together, [and] either way we should work to an end where our prison system is dramatically smaller than it is today,” she added.

Democratic New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland described Antifa as “peaceful protesters” Saturday, the same day members of the violent group clashed with the right-wing Proud Boys in Portland.

Haaland offered the inaccurate description on CNN after President Donald Trump tweeted “Major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an “ORGANIZATION OF TERROR.’”

“This is on par with what the president does. He sides with the white supremacists, the white nationalists, with the domestic terrorists in our country, just as — you know, he has incited violence against people of color,” Haaland said.

“Portland is a progressive city. They want to ensure that they keep their city moving forward. It’s not surprising that Trump would side away from the folks who are the peaceful protesters working to safe guard their city from domestic terrorism. Just not surprised at all that the president sides with the white nationalists. That’s been his mode of operation since before he was elected president,” the congresswoman continued.

WATCH:

Haaland’s misleading description of the left-wing movement was first flagged by the conservative Media Research Center.

Contrary to the congresswoman’s claim, Antifa members have repeatedly engaged in violence.

Masked individuals at an Antifa rally in June violently attacked journalist Andy Ngo, sending him to the hospital. Antifa members in Philadelphia attacked two Marines in Philadelphia last year.
